Using a second number to protect your privacy
Updated 2026-09-27
Many sites ask for a phone number only to sign up. Giving them a separate number keeps your own out of their databases, their marketing lists and any future data leak.
When a second number helps
- Trying a service you may not keep.
- Marketplaces and classifieds where strangers would otherwise see your number.
- Sites known for marketing calls after sign-up.
When to use your own number
A verification number is used for one activation. If an account may ask for a code again later — to log in on a new device or to recover the password — you will not be able to receive it on that number. Keep your own number, or an authenticator app, on:
- banking, payment and crypto accounts;
- your main e-mail account;
- anything you could not afford to lose access to.
A good habit
After signing up with a temporary number, add an authenticator app or backup codes in the account's security settings, so logging in later does not depend on that number.
