DiDi's safety tools assume you can pick up

DiDi markets itself partly on what happens during a trip, not just on getting one booked: a passenger can share the live route with someone they trust, reach an emergency contact through a button inside the app, and in some markets the trip itself is recorded for later reference. None of that is decorative — it is built to reach the passenger through the phone number tied to the account, whether that means a message going out to a contact or a callback coming in.

That dependency is the reason this article treats DiDi differently from a plain booking app. Verifying the number gets the account open; it does not tell you whether the same number will still take a call twenty minutes into a trip. A passenger who rents a number only long enough to sign up, then lets it lapse, is quietly opting out of the safety layer DiDi built the account around, without necessarily realizing it.

People most often use one of our numbers for DiDi to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

What a shared trip actually sends, and to whom

Sending a trip to a contact works by pushing a link out through a text message or another messaging channel, so the person watching along can see the route without needing the DiDi app themselves. That link, once sent, is only as useful as the number that keeps updating it — if the passenger's number stops receiving anything partway through, the person they shared the trip with is left watching a route that has gone quiet.

There's a privacy side worth naming too: the number behind the account can surface in a ride receipt, and depending on the market and the contact method DiDi uses for that trip, a driver may see it as well. Anyone renting a number specifically to keep a personal line off a driver's screen should know that the number they do use still travels with the trip in these smaller ways, not just at signup.

Getting something back after you left it in the car

Leaving a phone or a bag behind is common enough that DiDi builds a path for it: the trip record identifies which driver was on that route, and the usual next step is a call connecting the passenger and driver to arrange getting the item back. That path runs on the same number that booked the ride, since the record shows the account's number as the way to reach the person who lost something.

A number that has already been returned to the rental pool at that point ends the path before it starts. There is no separate recovery channel that skips the phone call — if the account's number can't take a call once a driver is reachable, whatever was left behind is likely to stay lost, regardless of how clear the trip record is on its own.

Latin America, DiDi Food and the wallet

Outside China, DiDi's biggest footprint is across Latin America, where riders in several countries have come to expect a locally issued number behind ordinary apps rather than one from elsewhere. A number rented from a country unrelated to where someone is actually riding can still clear the signup SMS while sitting awkwardly against a market that assumes local numbers as the norm, which is worth weighing before picking a country.

In a number of those countries DiDi also runs a food-ordering service and a wallet alongside rides, typically under the same account and the same verified number rather than as separate signups. A number good enough to open a rider profile is, in those markets, also the number an order confirmation or a wallet top-up prompt would reach, so the same reachability question follows into whichever of DiDi's services gets used next.

Why signing up to drive is a different application

Becoming a DiDi driver runs through its own process — license and vehicle documents, background screening, and an ongoing relationship where DiDi and passengers both expect to reach the driver on the number attached to that application, for as long as the driver keeps taking trips, not for a signup window. A rented number, built to expire, is the wrong foundation for something meant to outlast a rental period by months or years.

This article covers riding with DiDi, not driving for it, and says so directly: use a number you actually keep for driver registration. A rental works fine for exploring the rider side of the app; it is not a shortcut through the paperwork on the driver side.

A caller asking you to "confirm a trip" with a code

A pattern worth knowing about: someone contacts a rider by phone or message, claims to be a DiDi driver or a member of DiDi support, and asks the rider to read back a code to "confirm the trip," "verify the fare" or unlock some benefit. The code that arrives by SMS exists to be typed into DiDi's own app by the account holder — no legitimate driver or support contact needs it spoken or forwarded to them.

This holds regardless of whether the number behind the account is a personal SIM or a rented one. If a call or message asks for a code under any framing tied to a trip, the safe response is to not share it and to check what is actually happening inside the DiDi app itself rather than trusting the caller.

Swapping the number before the rental runs out

Once a rented number goes back into circulation, whoever picks it up next can potentially receive SMS still addressed to accounts that list it, including a DiDi login code. Beyond that basic risk, every safety feature covered above — trip sharing, an emergency callback, lost-property calls — quietly stops working the moment the number stops belonging to the account holder, even though the app itself gives no obvious warning.

The fix is the same one this site recommends for every app built around a live number: open the account settings before the rental ends and switch to a number held for the long term. DiDi verifies the replacement with a fresh SMS code, and trip history and any saved payment method carry over untouched. Given how much of DiDi's safety design leans on the number staying current, this step matters more here than it does on a plain booking app.

Installing DiDi and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Get DiDi from Google Play and open it
  2. Pick the country and type in the rented number with its country code
  3. Watch for the SMS code and enter it on the verification screen
  4. Fill in a name to finish the rider profile
  5. Add a payment method once you're ready to book a trip
  6. Open account settings and confirm the number and country DiDi has on file
  7. Set up a trip-share contact only once you know the number will stay reachable
  8. Decide before the rental ends whether to switch to a number you keep

On iPhone

  1. Get DiDi from the App Store and open it

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The number's range isn't one DiDi's SMS route currently reaches
Look at the country table on this page before choosing a number; whether DiDi codes land depends on the specific range that day, and switching ranges usually works better than repeating the same request.
  2. The connection's country is far from the number's own country
Route through a connection based near the number's country where you can. A wide gap between the two is a frequent reason DiDi's SMS gets delayed or never shows up.
  3. Several codes were requested back to back on the same number
Stop and give it a few minutes rather than requesting again right away; repeated attempts tend to delay the next code instead of speeding one through.
  4. The code was typed in after the verification screen had already reset
Ask for a new code instead of reusing an old one; an expired code gets rejected regardless of whether it was correct. Keep the order open so the fresh one can be read as soon as it lands.
  5. The number was entered with a wrong digit or a missing country code
Check the number against exactly what was issued before trying again; one wrong digit sends the code somewhere else entirely.
  6. A trip-share link went quiet partway through a ride
This usually means the account's number stopped receiving updates, not that the link itself failed. Confirm the number is still active before relying on trip sharing again.
  7. A driver couldn't reach you about a lost item after a trip
The recovery process runs on a phone call to the number on the account; if that number no longer works, the trip record alone won't get the item back.
  8. The account can't be signed into after the rental period ended
Expected once the number no longer belongs to you. If the account still matters, the number needs replacing in settings before the rental lapses, since there's nowhere else for recovery to go.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Are you applying to drive rather than to ride? Yes Stop; driver registration needs a number DiDi can reach for the long term, not a rental. No Continue with rider signup using the rented number.
  2. Did the SMS code land within a couple of minutes? Yes Enter it before the verification screen resets. No Check the country table on this page for the number's range before requesting again.
  3. Do you plan to use trip sharing or the emergency button on real rides? Yes Keep the rented number active for as long as you're taking trips, since those tools route through it. No Signup alone doesn't depend on the number staying live afterward.
  4. Did you leave something behind in a car after a trip? Yes Make sure your number can still take a call; that's how DiDi's lost-property process reaches you. No No action needed here.
  5. Is the rental close to ending and you still use this account? Yes Go to account settings now and replace the number with one you control. No No action needed once the account is no longer in use.

Questions

Does DiDi accept a rented or virtual number?

Often, for a rider account, depending on the number's range rather than a blanket rule against rented numbers. The table on this page shows which countries are currently receiving DiDi codes.

Why does DiDi get treated differently from a plain ride app here?

Because DiDi builds safety features — trip sharing, an emergency button, recorded rides in some markets — around reaching the passenger through the number on the account, not just around a one-time signup check.

What happens to trip sharing if my rented number stops working?

The link a contact was watching stops updating, since it depends on the account's number staying live. The contact sees a route that has gone quiet, with nothing telling them why.

Does my number show up to the driver or on a receipt?

It can, depending on the market and the contact method used for a given trip. Someone renting a number to keep a personal line private should expect the rented number to travel with the trip in this way instead.

How does DiDi help if I leave something in the car?

The usual path runs through the trip record identifying the driver, followed by a phone call to arrange getting the item back. That call goes to the number on the account, so it depends on that number still working.

Can I use a rented number to register as a DiDi driver?

No. Driver registration involves document and background checks and expects a number DiDi can reach for as long as the driver is active, not just for a short rental window.

Is DiDi available across Latin America?

It's one of DiDi's largest markets outside China, spanning several countries where DiDi also runs food ordering and a wallet in some places. Local numbers are generally expected there more than a number picked for availability alone.

Do DiDi Food and the wallet use a different number?

Usually not, in the countries where DiDi runs them alongside rides. They typically sit on the same account and the same verified number as the ride-hailing side.

Someone called saying they were my driver and asked for a code. Is that real?

No — that matches a known scam pattern. DiDi's codes are meant to be typed into the app by the account holder, not read aloud to a caller, whatever reason they give.

Can I keep using my DiDi account after the rented number expires?

Only if you update it first. Open account settings in the app and switch to a number you control before the rental ends; DiDi verifies the replacement with a fresh SMS code.

Will DiDi ask for the code again later?

Mainly if you change the number in settings, sign in on a new device, or the account gets flagged for review. Ordinary use of an already-verified account doesn't trigger another code.

What if the code never arrives — am I charged?

No. A code has to actually reach the number for a charge to apply; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically.
