The number is the account

When you install KakaoTalk on a phone, it asks for your number and sends a code. From then on, that number identifies you: friends who have your number in their contacts can find you, and the app on that phone is your main KakaoTalk. Install KakaoTalk on another phone with the same number and the first phone is signed out.

That design is convenient in Korea, where people keep numbers for decades. For anyone using a temporary number, it means the account depends on something that will not last — unless you add the pieces that make it portable.

The Kakao Account is what makes it portable

A Kakao Account — usually your email address with a password — links to KakaoTalk and to other Kakao services. It is used to sign in on PC and tablet, to recover the account, and in many cases to move KakaoTalk to a new phone or a new number.

Link one as soon as you register, with an email you will keep. If the account was registered with a rented number, this is the step that decides whether it outlives the rental.

Chat history is only kept if you back it up

KakaoTalk does not keep your full chat history on its servers for you to download on a new phone. Chats move with you through a backup you create in the app's settings, protected by a password you choose. Restore it on the new phone after verification; without it, the new phone starts with an empty list.

Back up before any planned change — a new phone, a new number, or the end of a rental — and keep the backup password somewhere safe. KakaoTalk cannot recover it for you.

Changing the number on the account

KakaoTalk lets you change the phone number on your account from settings, verifying the new number while the old one is still working. That is the clean way off a temporary number: move to your own number while both are live, and friends, chats and profile stay put.

If you wait until the old number is gone, you are relying on the Kakao Account and whatever recovery options it offers, and some things may not come back.

PC and tablet are secondary

KakaoTalk for PC and the tablet version sign in with your Kakao Account and confirm the sign-in on the main phone. They extend the phone account; they do not replace it. If the phone account is lost, the secondary devices lose their anchor too.

Payments and identity

Kakao Pay, Kakao Bank links, gift sending and some age-limited content rely on Korean identity verification, which works through a Korean carrier or certificate in your own name. A foreign or rented number can run the messenger; it will not open those features.

Scams on KakaoTalk often impersonate a family member who has "lost their phone" and needs money or a code. Call the person on a number you already know before doing anything.

Installing KakaoTalk and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No SMS arrived
   Check the country code, wait, and request once more. KakaoTalk may offer a call instead — choose SMS for a rented number.
2. The number is already registered on KakaoTalk
   Registering it would take over that account. Use a fresh number.
3. Your chats disappeared on a new phone
   Restore the backup with its password. Without a backup, history cannot be brought back.
4. PC sign-in asks for confirmation on the phone
   That is normal; the phone is the main device.
5. A "family member" asks for money or a code
   Call them on a number you already know first.
