A local marketplace by design

Adverts works best when buyer and seller are in the same part of Ireland: you see the item, pay and carry it home. Most trouble on classifieds sites happens when that pattern breaks, when a "buyer" cannot come in person, wants to pay in an unusual way, or needs a courier.

The phone number sits inside that local pattern. It helps people agree a time and find each other at the door.

People most often use one of our numbers for Adverts to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Keeping your number off public ads

Numbers shown on public ads get collected, by scammers and by people who want to sell to you. Many sellers leave the number off and use the site's messaging until they have agreed a sale, then share a number with that one buyer.

If you would rather not share your main mobile at all, a second number you keep for selling does the job. It still needs to take calls and texts for as long as your ads are live.

Verification and trust

Adverts asks users to verify contact details, and a verified phone is one of the signals other users see. Feedback from past deals and the age of the account matter too. A brand-new account with no feedback and a number that changes every few weeks looks exactly like the accounts scammers use. Genuine buyers notice.

Getting paid safely

For in-person sales, cash or an instant bank transfer you can see in your own banking app before handing over the item are the usual choices. A screenshot of a transfer is not money. Neither is an email saying a payment is "pending" until you send a tracking number.

If you post an item, use a tracked service and wait until payment has actually cleared.

The scams to recognise

Common patterns: a buyer who cannot view the item but will send a courier and pay "extra for the trouble"; a payment that arrives as an email from a lookalike address; a request to click a link to "receive" money; or a seller asking for a deposit to hold an item you have not seen. Another is a message asking you to confirm a code sent to your phone, which is an attempt to take over your account.

When a deal only works if you skip seeing the other person, step back.

Meeting up

Meet in daylight, in a public place where possible, or with someone else at home for larger items. Check the item before you pay. Keep the conversation in site messages until you are sure of the deal, so there is a record if something goes wrong.

On Android

  1. Open adverts.ie or the app and create an account with your email
  2. Verify a phone number
  3. Choose whether to show a number on your ads
  4. Deal through site messages until a sale is agreed

  6. Accept cash or a transfer you can see has landed

On iPhone

  1. Open adverts.ie or the app and create an account with your email
  2. Verify a phone number
  3. Choose whether to show a number on your ads
  4. Deal through site messages until a sale is agreed
  5. Share a number that works on the day with the buyer
  6. Accept cash or a transfer you can see has landed

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The verification code did not arrive
Check the country code and wait before requesting again. Irish mobiles work most reliably.
  2. Buyers ignore your ads
Complete your profile, verify your details and build feedback with small sales.
  3. A buyer wants to send a courier and pay extra
Treat it as a likely scam. Insist on collection in person.
  4. You received a payment screenshot
Check your own banking app. A screenshot is not a payment.
  5. Someone asks you for a code sent to your phone
Refuse. It would give them your account.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Will buyers call you to collect? Yes Use a number that works until your ads close. No Site messages may be enough.
  2. Do you want your main mobile off ads? Yes Hide the number or use a second one you keep. No Show it, knowing it can be collected.
  3. Can the buyer view in person? Yes Meet, check, and get paid. No Be very cautious.
  4. Did anyone ask for a code? Yes Refuse. No Carry on.

Questions

Does Adverts.ie accept rented numbers?

Sometimes, for verification, depending on the range. For buyers to reach you, use a number you keep.

Do I have to show my number on ads?

No. You can deal through site messages and share a number only with the buyer.

Is a foreign number a problem?

Irish buyers expect Irish numbers, and codes to foreign numbers are less reliable.

Is a bank transfer screenshot proof of payment?

No. Check your own banking app.

Should I use a courier for a buyer abroad?

That is a common scam pattern. Prefer collection in person.

What if the code never arrives?

If you used one of our numbers, you are not charged; the held amount returns to your balance.

Do you have free Adverts numbers?

Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Adverts usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.

What if Adverts does not send the code?

You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.

How much does a Adverts number cost?

From $4.07, depending on the country. The price shown is the whole price: it is held on your balance and charged only when the SMS arrives.

Can I use the number again later?

No. An activation covers one code. If the account may ask for a code again, keep your own number on it or add an authenticator app.

Which country should I choose for Adverts?

Right now the lowest prices are in United Kingdom ($4.07), Brazil ($4.16), Finland ($4.16). Where we have at least 100 measured orders the table also shows the delivery rate — when there is one, pick the country with the highest rate.
