Klarna is credit, so the account has to be you
The checkout button makes it feel like a payment method, but "pay in 3", "pay in 30 days" and longer financing are all forms of credit. Klarna pays the shop and you owe Klarna. Before it does that, it checks who you are, and depending on the country and the product it may run a credit check that leaves a record.
None of that is attached to a phone line. The debt, the credit record and the obligation to pay sit with the person, which is why a Klarna account opened on a number you will not hold next month is a poor fit for anything beyond looking around.
People most often use one of our numbers for Klarna to:
- Looking around the Klarna app before deciding to use it
- Checking what the app offers in a country before moving there
- Keeping a personal number private while you decide
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

What the phone number does on Klarna
The Klarna app signs you in with a phone number or an email address and a one-time code. Purchases can be confirmed with a code as well, and Klarna sends reminders before payments are due and confirmations after they are taken. When something about the account changes, the security codes go to the contact details on file.
Each of those is a message you need to receive for as long as a purchase is being paid off. A four-payment plan runs for weeks; longer financing runs for months or years.

What happens if the number disappears mid-plan
If the number on a Klarna account stops working while a plan is open, the debt does not stop. Automatic collections continue from the saved card, and if one fails, reminders go to a number nobody reads. Missed payments can bring late fees and, in many countries, a note with credit agencies that follows you long after the purchase.
Recovering the account without the number means proving your identity to Klarna by other means, at exactly the moment a payment may be overdue. That is the scenario to avoid, and it is avoided by using a number you will keep.

The narrow case where a rented number fits
Some people want to see how the Klarna app works — its shopping browser, price alerts or what a financing offer might look like — before deciding whether to hand over their personal number. For browsing without buying, a rented number keeps the personal line out until you decide.
The moment you are about to buy, switch the account to your own number in settings, or open a fresh account on it. It is better to do that before the first purchase than to discover during a plan that reminders are going nowhere.
Codes at a shop's checkout
When you choose Klarna at a web shop, Klarna may ask for your email and phone number and send a code to confirm it is you. That code authorises a purchase on your credit. It is not a shop's code, not a delivery code and not something a "support agent" needs.
The common scam here is a call or message that claims to be from a shop or from Klarna and asks you to read out a code to "cancel an order" or "stop a fraud". The code does the opposite: it lets the caller complete a purchase that you will be asked to pay for.
Different countries, different Klarna
Klarna operates in a defined set of countries, and the products differ between them: which instalment options exist, whether longer financing is offered, how credit checks work and which regulator oversees it. Your account is tied to the country where it was opened, including the phone number and address it expects.
Installing Klarna and verifying the number
On Android
- Install Klarna from Google Play only if you are exploring, not buying
- Sign up with the rented number and enter the code at once
- Browse the app without making a purchase or accepting a financing offer
- Before any purchase, change the phone number in settings to your own
- Keep email and phone details current for as long as any plan is open
On iPhone
- Install Klarna from the App Store only if you are exploring, not buying
- Sign up with the rented number and enter the code at once
- Browse the app without making a purchase or accepting a financing offer
- Before any purchase, change the phone number in settings to your own
- Keep email and phone details current for as long as any plan is open
When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- No code arrived
Check the country code and that the number is from a country where Klarna operates, then wait before requesting again. - Klarna declined a purchase
Klarna decides case by case using its own checks. A new or rarely used account, a mismatch between details, or the amount can all lead to a decline. - A payment reminder never arrived
Reminders go to the contact details on file. If that is a rented number that has ended, update it now and check the app for due dates. - Someone called asking for your Klarna code
Hang up. The code confirms purchases on your credit; nobody legitimate needs it. - You cannot sign in after changing phones
Sign in with the email route if you added one, or contact Klarna customer service to verify your identity. - An old number is still on the account
Change it in the app's profile settings; a code to the new number confirms it.
Working out which case you are in
- Are you about to buy something with Klarna? Yes Use your own long-term number — the agreement and reminders last for the whole plan. No A rented number can cover exploring the app.
- Is any plan currently open on the account? Yes Keep the contact details current until it is fully paid. No You can change details freely.
- Has someone asked for a Klarna code? Yes Refuse and report; it lets them buy on your credit. No Carry on.
- Is the number from the same country as the account? Yes Continue. No Use a number from that country.
Before you request another code
- Use your own number before making any Klarna purchase
- Keep phone and email current until every plan is paid
- Read reminders and pay on time to avoid fees and credit reporting
- Never share a Klarna code with a caller or a message
- Use a number from the same country as the account
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own mobile number | Yes | Known to Klarna and your carrier | Full, for the life of every plan | The right choice for any purchase |
| A rented private number like ours | Depends on the range | Keeps your line private while exploring | Ends with the rental — reminders would stop | Browsing only, never a purchase |
| A travel SIM | Sometimes | Temporary | Ends with the SIM | Unsuitable for credit that outlives the trip |
| A public SMS inbox | Rarely | None — anyone could confirm purchases | None | Dangerous: it would expose your credit |

Questions
Is Klarna a loan?
Its pay-later and instalment options are forms of credit: Klarna pays the shop and you repay Klarna. Longer financing is a loan in the ordinary sense.
Does Klarna accept rented numbers?
Sometimes, depending on the range and country. We recommend using one only to explore the app, never for a purchase.
Why do you advise against a rented number for purchases?
Because a plan runs for weeks or longer and Klarna sends reminders and security codes to the number on file. If it lapses, you still owe the money but stop hearing about it.
Does Klarna do a credit check?
It depends on the country and product. Some options use a soft check; financing can involve a fuller one. Klarna explains which applies at checkout.
Can I change the number on my Klarna account?
Yes, in the app's profile settings, confirmed with a code to the new number.
Someone asked for my Klarna code to cancel an order — is that real?
No. The code authorises purchases on your credit. Hang up and report it.
What if I miss a payment?
Klarna may charge a late fee and, in many countries, report missed payments to credit agencies. Keep details current so reminders reach you.
What if the code never arrives?
You are not charged for the number. The held amount returns to your balance when no SMS arrives in time.
Is Klarna available in every country?
No. It runs in a defined set of countries with different products in each; check Klarna's site for yours.
Do you have free Klarna numbers?
Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Klarna usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.
What if Klarna does not send the code?
You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.
How much does a Klarna number cost?
From $4.02, depending on the country. The price shown is the whole price: it is held on your balance and charged only when the SMS arrives.
