The number is for employers, not for Indeed

Indeed itself mostly talks to you by email: sign-in codes, application confirmations, messages. The phone number matters because it goes on your applications and your profile, and recruiters use it to arrange interviews. Some will text, some will call, sometimes from numbers you do not recognise.

That flips the usual advice. For an app that only sends a code, a short rental is fine. For a job search that may run for weeks, the number has to keep ringing.

People most often use one of our numbers for Indeed to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

A second number for job hunting

Keeping your personal number off public CVs is reasonable. The better way to do it is a second number you hold for the whole search: a second SIM, an eSIM, or a number from your carrier or a calling app that you keep for months. It can receive calls as well as texts, and it can go on your CV without exposing your main line.

A rented verification number receives texts only and lasts a short time. Use it, if at all, only for account security steps — never as the number employers see.

Job scams to recognise

Job boards attract fraud. Common patterns: an "interview" held entirely in a chat app, an offer made without any real interview, a request to buy equipment and be reimbursed, a cheque to deposit and partly send back, or a request for your bank details or identity documents before any contract.

Indeed reviews employers and removes fake listings, but some get through. Research the company independently, keep conversations on channels you can verify, and never pay to get a job.

Profile visibility

Your Indeed profile and resume can be public — searchable by employers — or private, used only when you apply. A public profile brings more contact, including more unsolicited and sometimes dubious messages. If you are not actively open to approaches, private is the calmer choice.

Check what your resume shows: a full home address and personal number are rarely needed. City and a reachable number are usually enough.

Keeping the account secure

Indeed sends sign-in codes to your email, so the email account is the key: protect it with a strong password and two-step verification. If Indeed asks for a phone number for security, use one you will keep, so you are not locked out when a code goes to a number you no longer have.

Installing Indeed and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install Indeed Job Search from Google Play and sign up with your email
  2. Enter the code Indeed sends to your email
  3. Add a phone number you will keep for the whole job search
  4. Choose whether your profile and resume are public or private
  5. Remove unnecessary personal details from the resume
  6. Protect your email with two-step verification

On iPhone

  1. Install Indeed Job Search from the App Store and sign up with your email
  2. Enter the code Indeed sends to your email
  3. Add a phone number you will keep for the whole job search
  4. Choose whether your profile and resume are public or private
  5. Remove unnecessary personal details from the resume
  6. Protect your email with two-step verification

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The sign-in code did not arrive
Indeed usually sends it by email. Check spam and the address you typed.
  2. Employers say they could not reach you
Check the number on your profile and applications is current and can take calls.
  3. A recruiter wants to continue only on a chat app
Treat it with suspicion. Verify the company independently.
  4. An offer asks you to buy equipment or deposit a cheque
Those are classic scams. Stop and report the listing.
  5. You get too many unsolicited messages
Set your profile and resume to private.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Will the number go on your applications? Yes Use one you keep for months that takes calls. No A rented number can cover a security step.
  2. Do you want your personal number private? Yes Use a second number you hold for the search. No Use your main number.
  3. Did a job ask you to pay or move to a chat app? Yes Stop and report it. No Carry on.
  4. Are you open to approaches? Yes A public profile helps. No Set it to private.

Questions

Does Indeed need a phone number?

The account runs on email; a phone number is added for security and so employers can contact you.

Can I use a rented number on Indeed?

For a security code, sometimes. Do not put one on applications — employers need to reach you for weeks.

How do I keep my personal number private?

Use a second number you keep for the whole search, and consider a private profile.

How do I spot a fake job on Indeed?

Requests for payment, equipment purchases, cheques, bank details, or chat-only interviews are warning signs.

Who can see my phone number?

Employers you apply to, and anyone who can view your resume if it is public.

What if the code never arrives?

If you used one of our numbers, you are not charged; the held amount returns to your balance.

Do you have free Indeed numbers?

Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Indeed usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.

What if Indeed does not send the code?

You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.

How much does a Indeed number cost?

From $4.05, depending on the country. The price shown is the whole price: it is held on your balance and charged only when the SMS arrives.

Can I use the number again later?

No. An activation covers one code. If the account may ask for a code again, keep your own number on it or add an authenticator app.

Which country should I choose for Indeed?

Right now the lowest prices are in United Kingdom ($4.05), Malaysia ($4.06), India ($4.08). Where we have at least 100 measured orders the table also shows the delivery rate — when there is one, pick the country with the highest rate.
