Registering Signal on a number you rent

Signal verifies a number the same basic way most messaging apps do: you enter it, a numeric code is sent by SMS, and a voice call is offered if the text does not arrive within a short wait. A fresh rented number in a range Signal delivers to normally will register without incident, and the table on this page tracks which countries are getting Signal codes through today rather than relying on Signal's general reputation for any one place.

The complication with Signal is not delivery, it is what a number carries with it from whoever used it before. Signal accounts can be protected by a PIN that stops re-registration outright, and a rented number that a previous renter locked this way will refuse to register no matter how correct your code entry is. That single feature, called Registration Lock, is the subject of the next section, and it is worth reading even if this is your first Signal number, because you will likely set one yourself.

People most often use one of our numbers for Signal to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Registration Lock: your protection, and someone else's wall

Registration Lock is a PIN that a Signal account owner can turn on to stop the account being re-registered on a new device without that PIN, even by someone who controls the phone number and receives the SMS code. It exists because a phone number alone is a weak proof of identity: numbers get reassigned, SIMs get swapped, and a rented number is eventually handed to someone else entirely. Registration Lock is Signal's answer to that weakness, and it is the single most consequential setting on this page for a rented number.

Seen from the other side, this is exactly why a Signal number sometimes will not register for you. If the previous renter turned Registration Lock on and never turned it off before the number changed hands, Signal will ask for a PIN you do not have and cannot obtain. There is no legitimate way around another person's Registration Lock, and no support request changes that; the honest response is to release that number and take a different one, not to keep retrying.

The lock does eventually lapse if the PIN is never entered, because Signal does not want a permanently unregisterable number sitting on its network forever. How long that takes varies and is not something to plan around or wait out — treat a locked number as unusable now, and choose a different one.

What the Signal PIN is, and what it is not

It helps to be precise about the Signal PIN, because it is easy to assume it works like an app password. It does not. Day-to-day use of Signal on a device you are already logged into does not ask for the PIN at all; there is no PIN prompt to open the app or read a conversation. The PIN's job is narrower: it gates re-registration through Registration Lock, and it lets Signal restore a small amount of account data — your profile, settings and the people you have blocked — when you register on a new device, without that data leaking to anyone who merely receives your SMS code.

What the PIN does not protect is your message history, because that history is not stored where the PIN could restore it from in the first place. It also is not a substitute for your device's own screen lock, and it is not something FreeSmsOtp can set, retrieve or reset on your behalf; it belongs entirely to whoever controls the Signal account.

Using Signal without handing out your number

A common question is whether Signal can be used without other people ever seeing the phone number behind it. The honest answer used to be no; today it is yes, because Signal supports usernames as a separate identity layer on top of the number. The phone number still does the job of registering the account and, if set, protecting it through Registration Lock, but it does not have to be the thing you hand someone to start a conversation.

Once a username is set, people can find and message you by that username instead of your number, and you can share a link or QR code that starts a chat without revealing the digits at all. This is the real answer to wanting privacy from other Signal users specifically: the number keeps its role behind the scenes, while the username is what shows up front.

Why losing a Signal number is a different loss than losing a Telegram one

Signal keeps message history on the device, encrypted, and does not hold a readable copy on its own servers the way some other apps sync chats to the cloud. That is a deliberate privacy choice, and it changes what "losing the number" actually costs you. Reinstalling Signal on a new device, or on the same device, starts an account with no history unless you move it over deliberately first, because there is no server copy waiting to be pulled down automatically.

Moving history between devices is a proper transfer process rather than a login: Signal walks you through linking the old device and the new one while both are available, and it is meant to happen before you give up the old number or the old phone, not after. A rented number treated as a long-term Signal identity should have that transfer planned for before the rental ends, the same way you would plan to move any account you intend to keep.

Safety numbers: verifying a contact, not a phone number

Phone number verification and safety number verification solve two different problems, and people new to Signal sometimes conflate them. Registering with SMS proves you control a number at one moment in time. A safety number is something else: it is a code unique to a conversation between you and a specific contact, and comparing it in person or through another trusted channel confirms that the encryption is happening directly between the two of you, with nobody able to read the conversation in between.

None of this depends on where either person's number came from. A conversation started from a rented number can have its safety number verified exactly like any other conversation; the number's origin has no bearing on the cryptography. What safety numbers do not do is prove who a person is in real life — they prove that the conversation has not been tampered with, which is a narrower and more useful guarantee.

Planning for the end of the rental

Signal, like the other apps on this site, ties the account to the number until you deliberately move it, and a rented number is by definition temporary. Anyone planning to keep a Signal identity built on a rented number should treat the rental period as a runway: move to a number you actually control, transfer the message history to a device you keep, and decide deliberately whether to set Registration Lock on the account you are moving to.

If the account is not worth keeping past the rental, the responsible close-out is simpler: make sure Registration Lock is off, or was never set, so the number is usable for whoever rents it after you, rather than handing them the exact problem described earlier in this article. A rented number is a reasonable way to get started on Signal; it is a weak foundation for an identity you expect to depend on long-term, and Signal's own privacy focus is part of why people who compartmentalise their identities often reach for it in the first place.

Installing Signal and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install Signal from Google Play and open it
  2. Enter the rented number, including its country code, exactly as issued
  3. Wait for the SMS code, or request the voice call option if it does not arrive after a short wait
  4. Enter the code on the verification screen before it expires
  5. Choose whether to restore data from a previous device, or start fresh
  6. Set a profile name, and a username if you want your number hidden from other people
  7. Open Settings, Account, and review whether Registration Lock is on or off before deciding
  8. Write down any PIN you set somewhere durable, since Signal cannot recover it for you

On iPhone

  1. Install Signal from the App Store and open it

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The number has Registration Lock still set by a previous renter
There is no legitimate way past someone else's Registration Lock PIN. Release the number and take a different one rather than retrying; waiting it out is not a practical plan either, since how long a lock persists is not fixed or predictable.
  2. Your connection's country is different from the number you rented
Use a connection based in, or close to, the number's own country where possible. A large mismatch between where the request comes from and the number's own country is a common cause of delayed or blocked delivery.
  3. You requested a code several times in quick succession
Stop and leave the number alone for a while rather than retrying immediately. Repeated attempts in a short window tend to push the next available attempt further out, not bring one sooner.
  4. The number's range is one Signal's SMS routes reach unevenly
Check the country table on this page before buying a number; delivery reliability is a property of the range on a given day, not something extra retries fix.
  5. You kept requesting SMS instead of trying the voice call
After one failed SMS attempt, use the call option on the same screen. Voice delivery sometimes succeeds on ranges where text messages are filtered.
  6. The code was entered after the verification screen had already timed out
Request a fresh code instead of retyping an old one; an expired code is rejected even if it was correct. Keep the order open so the next code can be read as soon as it lands.
  7. The number was entered with the wrong country code or a leading zero left in
Re-check the number exactly as issued, including its country code, before requesting again; a mistyped digit sends the code to an unrelated number that will never show it to you.
  8. You forgot your own PIN after setting Registration Lock
This is a problem only you can solve, and Signal cannot hand you the PIN back; it can only be reset through Signal's own recovery process, if one applies, or by accepting the account is inaccessible. Write the PIN down somewhere durable the moment you set one.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Did any SMS or call arrive at all? Yes Enter the code as soon as it arrives; codes expire quickly. No Check the country table for this range before assuming a fault.
  2. Is Signal asking for a PIN you never set? Yes The number has a previous owner's Registration Lock. Take a different number instead. No Continue with the SMS or voice-call flow as normal.
  3. Do you want people to reach you without seeing your number? Yes Set a username in Account settings and share that instead of the number. No The number itself can stay as your only identifier.
  4. Do you plan to keep this account past the rental? Yes Move the number, and transfer message history to a device you control, before the rental ends. No Consider leaving Registration Lock off so the number is usable for whoever rents it next.
  5. Are you setting Registration Lock on your own account? Yes Write the PIN down somewhere durable; Signal cannot hand it back if you forget it. No The account can still be re-registered by whoever controls the number later.

Questions

Does Signal accept virtual or rented numbers?

Usually for the registration step, depending on the number's range, the same as most messaging apps. The table on this page tracks current delivery by country. The bigger factor with Signal specifically is whether the number carries a previous owner's Registration Lock, not whether Signal objects to rented numbers.

What is Registration Lock, exactly?

An optional PIN, set by the account owner, that blocks anyone from re-registering the number on Signal without that PIN, even if they receive the SMS code. It protects your account if the number is ever lost or reassigned, and it is why a previously locked number can refuse to register for its next renter.

A number I rented is asking for a PIN I never set. What do I do?

That means a previous renter set Registration Lock and never turned it off. There is no legitimate way around it, and no amount of retrying changes that. Release the number and register with a different one instead.

Is the Signal PIN the same as a login password?

No. Opening Signal on a device you are already registered on does not ask for the PIN. The PIN only matters when re-registering the number on a new device, where it gates Registration Lock and restores a small amount of profile data, not your messages.

Can I use Signal without giving people my phone number?

Yes, by setting a username in Account settings. The number still handles registration behind the scenes, but people can find and message you by username or a shared link instead of ever seeing the digits.

What happens to my message history if I lose the number?

Nothing happens to messages already on your device; Signal does not store a readable copy on its servers, so losing the number does not erase what is already there. What you lose is the ability to receive new messages as that account unless you move to a number you control.

How do I move my Signal history to a new phone?

Through Signal's device-to-device transfer, done while both the old and new device are available, before you give up the old one. It is a deliberate process, not something that happens automatically when you register a new number.

What is a safety number, and is it the same as phone verification?

No, they are separate. Phone verification proves you controlled a number at registration. A safety number confirms that a specific conversation with a specific contact has not been tampered with. Comparing it in person or another trusted channel is how you verify a contact, not the number itself.

Should I set Registration Lock on a rented number?

Only if you plan to keep the account and can be certain you will not forget the PIN, since Signal cannot hand it back to you. If the account is short-term, leaving Registration Lock off is kinder to whoever rents the number after you.

I forgot my own Registration Lock PIN. Can it be recovered?

Not by us, and not by simply asking Signal. Recovery depends on Signal's own process, if one applies to your situation, and in many cases the honest outcome is that the locked account becomes inaccessible. This is exactly why writing the PIN down matters.

What if the code never arrives — am I charged?

You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded to your balance automatically, with nothing to claim. Try the voice-call option before giving up on that number.

Which country works best for Signal today?

It changes over time, which is why none is named here: the table on this page tracks real delivery by country and stays current. Check it before buying rather than relying on general reputation.
