Venmo is a US service with a US number

Venmo is available only in the United States and expects a US mobile number to open an account. The number is not optional contact information; it is how Venmo confirms you exist, how it recognises your devices and where it sends codes when something about the account changes.

Visitors to the US and people who have just arrived often ask whether a temporary number will do. For receiving a code once, perhaps. For an account that will hold money and link a bank, the number needs to be one you will still control months from now.

Why many internet numbers are turned away

Payment apps treat free internet calling numbers with suspicion because they are easy to create in bulk and easy to lose. Venmo refuses many of them at signup. Our numbers are real mobile ranges rather than VoIP, but acceptance still varies by range and changes over time, which is why the table on this page shows what is currently getting through.

Money moves instantly and rarely comes back

A Venmo payment to another person is designed to be quick and final. If someone takes over your account and sends your balance away, or you are tricked into paying for something that never arrives, getting the money back is difficult and often impossible.

That is the real reason the phone number matters. The codes it receives are what stop a person with your password from signing in on their own phone. An account whose number has lapsed has lost that protection and gained a recovery problem.

Your payments may be visible — check the setting

Venmo has long had a social side: payments can carry a note and an emoji, and depending on your privacy settings they can be visible to friends or to others. Many people find out only later that a list of who they paid and what for could be seen.

Venmo lets you set future payments to private and change the visibility of past ones. That setting protects far more personal detail than the choice of phone number does, and it is worth checking on day one.

Paying strangers: where most losses happen

Venmo is built for paying people you know. Using it to pay a stranger for a concert ticket, a puppy or a marketplace item is where most scams happen: the item never exists, the payment is gone, and personal payments carry little or no purchase protection. Venmo offers purchase protection only for payments marked as a purchase from an eligible seller.

The code scam also appears: a "buyer" or "seller" asks you to read back a code "to verify", which is actually the sign-in code for your account.

Identity checks come with limits and features

Keeping a balance, sending larger amounts, getting paid for goods and services, and some other features require Venmo to verify your identity with personal details. That is tied to you, not the phone line, and it is one more reason Venmo accounts belong on numbers that belong to their owners.

Installing Venmo and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. Venmo says the number cannot be used
   It may be treated as an internet or temporary number. Try another range from the table, or use your own US mobile line.
2. No code arrived
   Make sure the number is a US number entered with +1, wait, and request once more.
3. Venmo asks for identity details
   That comes with balances, higher limits and some features. It needs your own details; keep such an account on your own number.
4. A code request appeared on a new phone
   Venmo is confirming a new device. If the number on the account is no longer yours, contact Venmo support.
5. Someone asked for your Venmo code
   Refuse. It is the sign-in code for your account.
6. You paid a stranger and the item never came
   Contact Venmo support at once; personal payments have little or no purchase protection.

1. Will this account hold money or link a bank? Yes Use your own long-term US number. No A rented number can at most bridge a short gap.
2. Do you already have a US mobile line? Yes Use it for Venmo. No Move the account to one as soon as you get it.

• Keep money and bank links off any account not on your own number

• Pay only people you know
