One Yandex ID, many services

A single Yandex ID signs you in to Yandex Mail, Yandex Go for taxis and deliveries, Yandex Market, music and video subscriptions, Disk and more. Payment cards, addresses, subscriptions and order history all hang off that one account.

That shapes the phone question. On an app with one purpose, losing the number costs one account. On Yandex, the number confirmed on the ID is how you get back into everything at once, which is why it deserves a longer-term home than a single rental.

When the code comes as a phone call

To confirm a number, Yandex often does not send a text. Instead, your phone receives an incoming call from an unfamiliar number, and the code is the last few digits of that caller's number — you do not answer it, you just read them. It is cheaper and faster than SMS, and it is common across services in the region.

A rented verification number only receives text messages. It cannot see an incoming call, so this method will not work with it. If Yandex offers "send an SMS instead" or "I didn't get the call", choose the text option. If only the call is offered, a rented number is not a fit for that particular step.

Give the account ways in besides the number

Yandex ID supports a password, confirmation in the Yandex app on a phone where you are already signed in, and QR-code sign-in on a computer. Setting up at least a password and the app confirmation means the account can survive a number that lapses.

Yandex also shows the list of devices signed in to your ID and lets you sign out of them remotely — worth checking if the account was ever set up on a shared or temporary phone.

Region and payments

Many Yandex services are built for Russia and neighbouring countries, and which ones are available, and how they are paid for, depends on where you are. Some services operate in other countries under their own terms; others do not. Payment options, including which cards are accepted, differ by service and country and have changed over recent years.

Check availability in your country before relying on a service, and expect a local number from the same region to work more smoothly than one from far away.

Taxi and delivery: the number is also for the driver

Where you order a ride or a delivery through Yandex Go, the driver or courier may need to contact you, and the app connects them through your phone. A number that cannot take calls or that has lapsed makes a pickup or a handover harder. For rides and deliveries, a number you can actually answer matters as much as the code.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. Yandex tried to call instead of sending a text
   Choose the option to receive an SMS. A rented number cannot see calls.
2. No SMS arrived
   Check the country code, wait before requesting again, and try a number from a nearer region.
3. The number is already linked to another Yandex ID
   Numbers can be tied to a limited number of accounts. Use a fresh number.
4. A driver could not reach you
   Ride and delivery contact goes through your phone number. Use one you can answer.
5. You were asked for a code by a caller
   Refuse. Yandex does not ask for codes by phone or message.

2. Will you use Yandex Go for rides or deliveries? Yes Use a number you can answer. No The number matters mainly for confirmation and recovery.
