Why Blizzard asks for a phone

Free-to-play games have a problem: if a banned player can make a new account in two minutes, bans do little. Blizzard's answer, most visibly with Overwatch 2, was to require a phone number on accounts, so a banned cheater or a toxic player must find a new phone number, not just a new email. Blizzard later dropped the requirement for many players with established accounts, but the logic remains in its security and fair-play systems.

Using a stream of temporary numbers to make fresh accounts is exactly what this is meant to stop. We do not support using our numbers for it.

Numbers Blizzard refuses

Blizzard does not accept VoIP numbers for SMS Protect, and at Overwatch 2's launch it also refused many prepaid numbers, before adjusting its list. Numbers already attached to other accounts may be refused too. Expect Blizzard to reject numbers that look temporary or virtual, which is by design.

SMS Protect

With SMS Protect, Blizzard can send a code to your phone when you recover your account, change key settings or unlock it after suspicious activity. It is only useful if the number stays yours. Keep it current in your Battle.net settings, and change it before giving up the old number.

The Battle.net Authenticator

The Battle.net Authenticator app approves sign-ins with a tap or a code. It protects the account independently of your phone number and is the strongest everyday protection Blizzard offers. Attach it, save its restore code, and keep SMS Protect as a recovery layer.

How accounts get stolen

Common routes include fake "free mount", "beta invite" or "Twitch drop" pages that imitate the Battle.net login; downloaded add-ons, cheats or boosters bundled with password stealers; and "Blizzard staff" messages in game or on Discord asking you to verify your account. Blizzard does not ask for your password or codes, and gives away rewards through its own launcher and site.

Buying and selling accounts

Blizzard's terms do not allow buying, selling or sharing accounts. Bought accounts are often recovered by their original owners through SMS Protect or support, leaving the buyer with nothing. The phone number on an account is one of the ways the real owner proves it is theirs.

Changing your number

Update the phone on your Battle.net account while you still have the old one. You may be asked to confirm by the old number or the Authenticator. If the old number is gone, Blizzard support can help after verifying ownership, often with purchase history and identity details.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. Your number was refused
   VoIP and some prepaid numbers are not accepted. Numbers used on other accounts may be refused.
2. You lost the Authenticator
   Use the restore code, or contact Blizzard support.
3. You changed numbers and cannot recover
   Contact Blizzard support with proof of ownership.
4. A message offers a free mount or beta invite
   It is phishing. Blizzard gives rewards through its own launcher.
5. The account was locked for suspicious activity
   Follow the unlock steps, then change your password and attach the Authenticator.

Working out which case you are in

1. Is the number your own mobile? Yes Add it for SMS Protect. No Blizzard will likely refuse it.
2. Is the Authenticator attached? Yes Save the restore code. No Attach it.
3. Were you offered a free reward via a link? Yes Ignore it. No Carry on.
4. Thinking of buying an account? Yes It breaks the terms and is often reclaimed. No Good.
