The number is optional to sign up, but not optional forever

Instagram lets you create an account with an email address alone; a phone number is never demanded on the first screen. That leads some people to assume the number does not matter much for Instagram at all, and that is where the assumption breaks down. The number's real job starts later, after the account already has followers, posts and history worth protecting, at the exact moment something goes wrong with getting back in.

That later moment is what this article is really about. A rented number can stand in for a personal one at signup without friction, since Instagram treats it like any other mobile number capable of receiving a text. The question worth asking before relying on it is not whether it works today, but whether it will still be yours on the day Instagram decides to check.

Email plays a supporting role here too: an account with a working email address on file has a second way back in that does not depend on the number at all. Keeping that email current is the simplest thing a rented-number account can do to avoid being stranded later.

People most often use one of our numbers for Instagram to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

SMS two-factor and an authenticator app are not the same promise

Instagram offers two ways to add a second step to login: a code sent by text to the number on file, or a code generated inside an authenticator app on your device. Both satisfy the same setting, and both stop a password alone from being enough to log in. What they do not share is where the second factor actually lives.

SMS two-factor lives with the phone number. If that number is rented and eventually released, the second factor goes with it, and whoever ends up with the number next is standing exactly where the account's security expects only you to stand. An authenticator app lives on the device itself, generated locally, and has nothing to do with which number is currently active — losing the rented number does not touch it.

For an account meant to last beyond the rental, switching two-factor from SMS to an authenticator app is the single most useful thing covered in this article. It keeps the login step working exactly the way it did on day one, long after the number that started the account has moved on to somebody else.

What "confirm it's you" is actually asking for

Instagram sometimes interrupts a normal login with a checkpoint: a request to confirm it is really you, usually triggered by a new device, a new location, or activity the system finds unusual. The standard way through that screen is a code sent to the phone number or the email on the account, not a password re-entry.

This is where a rented number becomes a genuine risk rather than a hypothetical one. If the checkpoint reaches for the number on file and that number no longer belongs to you, there is no code to receive and no way past that screen through the number path. The account is not gone, but it is stuck, and the way out depends on whichever recovery options Instagram still has available — which is why a current email address and, where possible, an authenticator app matter more than they might seem to at the time they are set up.

A locked or flagged account behaves the same way: Instagram's recovery flow leans on the same contact details, in whichever order it judges most reliable. Nothing about a rented number makes an account more likely to be flagged, but everything about it makes a flag harder to clear once the number has moved on.

One number, more than one Instagram account

Instagram is more permissive than some messaging apps about a single phone number covering more than one account. It is common for people to run a personal account and a separate account for a project, a pet, or a small shop, all reachable through the same number for verification purposes. That is a real convenience, and part of why people rent a number specifically for Instagram rather than for an app that hard-locks one number to one account.

The same flexibility is also what turns the number into a weak link across every account attached to it, not just one. If a shared number is lost, every account that leaned on it for recovery or two-factor loses that safety net at the same time, not just the account that happened to be created most recently. Spreading several accounts across one rented number multiplies what is at stake if that number changes hands, even though nothing about setting it up that way looks risky in the moment.

Accounts Centre can tie the number to more than Instagram

Many Instagram accounts are connected to a Facebook account through Meta's Accounts Centre, which manages shared settings like contact information, ad preferences and, in some cases, login methods across both apps at once. Where that connection exists, a phone number added on one side can end up doing double duty, recognised by both apps rather than sitting inside Instagram alone.

This is worth knowing before assuming a number's reach stops at the app it was entered into. Someone who rents a number for Instagram and later connects the account to Facebook through Accounts Centre may find the number now matters to both, which is one more reason a number meant to be temporary should not quietly become the anchor for more than the one account it was rented for.

None of this requires connecting the two apps, and plenty of Instagram accounts never touch Accounts Centre at all. It is simply a detail worth checking in Settings before treating a rented number as something contained to a single app by default.

A business or creator account wants a public number for a different reason

Business and creator accounts on Instagram can show a public contact option — a phone number visitors can use to reach the account directly, separate from the private number used for login and verification. That is an entirely different use case from everything above: it is not about recovering the account, it is about giving customers a way to call or text without handing out a personal line.

A rented number suits this well, since it is meant to be visible and does not need to double as the account's lifeline back in. The two roles should stay separate where possible: a public contact number can be swapped or dropped without touching the account, while a number used for login and two-factor is the one this whole article is really about protecting.

What a rented number is for here, and what it is not for

Everything in this article assumes one account, opened and used by the person who rented the number. That is what we support: privacy at signup, a way to test an integration, a number for a first account without exposing a personal line. It is not support for mass account creation, evading a suspension, or getting past a checkpoint on an account that is not yours — Instagram's checkpoints exist specifically to catch that pattern, and we are not in the business of helping anyone route around them.

The honest version of this article's advice is short: a number that verifies an Instagram account today is not a substitute for the durable pieces — a current email address and an authenticator app for two-factor. Those two things keep working long after any rented number has moved on to its next renter, which is exactly the point at which a number-only account finds out how fragile it was.

Installing Instagram and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install Instagram from Google Play and open it
  2. Choose to sign up with a phone number, or use email instead if you prefer
  3. Enter the rented number, including its country code, exactly as issued
  4. Wait for the SMS code and enter it on the verification screen before it expires
  5. Set a username and password, and add a profile photo if you want one
  6. Add a working email address in Settings, Account Centre or Personal details, so recovery does not depend on the number alone
  7. Open Settings, Password and security, Two-factor authentication, and switch it to an authenticator app rather than SMS
  8. Review Accounts Centre if it appears, to see whether the number is now shared with a connected Facebook account

On iPhone

  1. Install Instagram from the App Store and open it

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. You requested a code several times in quick succession
Stop and leave it for a while rather than trying again immediately; a quarter of an hour is a sensible minimum. Repeated requests on Instagram tend to delay the next attempt rather than force one through.
  2. Your connection's country is different from the number you rented
Use a connection based in, or close to, the number's own country where possible. A mismatch between the requesting connection and the number's country is a common reason a code is slow or does not arrive.
  3. The number's range is one Instagram treats as unreliable for SMS
Check the country table on this page before buying: some ranges are filtered by Instagram's own delivery checks regardless of how long you wait. A range with a measured delivery record avoids this.
  4. The number already has a recent Instagram signup attached to it
Take a different number rather than retrying on the same one. A number with recent Instagram history is a frequent cause of a delayed or refused code.
  5. The code was entered after the verification screen had already timed out
Request a fresh code instead of retyping an old one; an expired code is rejected even if it was otherwise correct. Keep the order open so the next code can be read as soon as it lands.
  6. The number was entered with the wrong country code or a leading zero left in
Re-check the number exactly as issued before requesting again; a mistyped digit sends the code to an unrelated number, and it will never arrive.
  7. A checkpoint appeared asking to confirm it's you on a number you no longer hold
This is the situation the rest of this article is about avoiding. There is no way to receive that code once the number has moved on; try the account's registered email instead, if one is set, through Instagram's own recovery flow.
  8. Instagram asks for a code on an account you did not create yourself
Stop. We support setting up your own account, not recovering or accessing one that belongs to someone else, and there is no legitimate way to receive a code meant for another person's account.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Did the SMS code arrive at all? Yes Enter it on the verification screen before it expires. No Check the country table on this page, then try again after a short wait.
  2. Do you plan to keep this account after the rental ends? Yes Add a current email address and switch two-factor to an authenticator app now, not later. No SMS verification alone is enough for a short-lived account.
  3. Is a checkpoint asking for a code on a number you no longer hold? Yes Try the account's registered email through Instagram's own recovery flow instead. No Continue with the SMS verification as normal.
  4. Are you running more than one account on this number? Yes Treat the number as the single point of failure for all of them, and move each account's two-factor to an authenticator app. No One account on this number is the simpler case.
  5. Is the account connected to Facebook through Accounts Centre? Yes Check which contact details are now shared before assuming the number is Instagram-only. No The number's role stays limited to this one Instagram account.

Questions

Does Instagram require a phone number to sign up?

No. An email address is enough to create an account, and a phone number is only ever an option. Where the number matters is later, for account recovery and for a "confirm it's you" checkpoint, not for the signup screen itself.

Does Instagram accept virtual or rented numbers?

Often, depending on the number's range and recent history rather than any blanket rule against rented numbers. The table on this page shows which countries are delivering codes today, and a range that struggles today can work again later.

What is the difference between SMS and authenticator app two-factor?

SMS two-factor sends a code to the number on the account, so it depends on still holding that number. An authenticator app generates the code locally on your device and keeps working even if the phone number later changes or is lost.

What happens if a "confirm it's you" checkpoint reaches a number I no longer have?

There is no code to receive, so that particular path through the checkpoint is closed. The account is not deleted, but recovery then depends on whatever else is on file, such as a registered email address, through Instagram's own recovery flow.

Can one phone number be used for more than one Instagram account?

Generally yes, which is different from some messaging apps that tie one number to exactly one account. It is convenient, but it also means losing that number puts every account attached to it at risk at the same time.

Why does my Instagram account show a connection to Facebook?

Meta's Accounts Centre can link an Instagram account to a Facebook account and share some settings, including contact details, between them. This is optional and happens when an account is connected, not automatically for every account.

Should I use a rented number as my account's permanent recovery method?

No. A rented number is fine to get an account started, but an account that depends on it forever is fragile. Add a current email address and move two-factor to an authenticator app if the account is one you intend to keep.

What is the public contact number on a business or creator account?

It is a number shown to visitors so they can reach the account directly, separate from the private number used for login and verification. A rented number works well here since it is meant to be visible rather than kept private.

Will Instagram ask for the number again later?

Mainly at a security checkpoint, if SMS two-factor is turned on, or if the account looks locked or flagged. Ordinary day-to-day use of an already-verified account does not trigger another code.

What if the code never arrives — am I charged?

You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically, with nothing to claim. Check the country table before buying to avoid a range with poor delivery.

Can I switch to my own number after signing up on a rented one?

Yes, the phone number on an Instagram account can be changed in Settings once you are logged in. Doing this before the rental ends, and before adding an authenticator app, is the safest order.

Is renting a number to open a personal Instagram account against its terms?

Instagram expects the number and account to belong to the person using them, and we hold to that: we support one person setting up their own account for privacy, business, or testing. We do not help with mass account creation, evading a suspension, or getting past a checkpoint on an account that is not yours.
