Property portals earn money by connecting people. When you tap to contact a listing, your details can go to the person or company that posted it. Depending on the listing, that may be an owner, a broker or a builder's sales team. Similar listings may lead to more calls, and brokers often call about properties you did not ask about.

None of this is unusual for the industry, but it surprises people who used their main number for a quick look.

Under India's Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, most new projects must be registered with the state's RERA authority, and listings should show the registration number. You can look it up on the state RERA website to check the approval, the timeline and the builder's details before paying a booking amount.

When the calls do not stop

Tell callers clearly that you are no longer looking. Update or remove your requirement on the portal, and use your phone's call-blocking. In India you can also register with the national Do Not Disturb preference through your carrier. It limits commercial calls, though it will not stop everyone.
