Every transfer has two phone numbers
When you send money with Remitly, you enter your own details and your recipient's. Both include a phone number, and they do different jobs. Yours signs you in, confirms transfers and receives updates. Theirs receives the message that money is coming and, depending on the delivery method, may be the destination itself.
Most questions about "which number for Remitly" are about the sender side, but most real-world problems are on the recipient side. It helps to think of them separately.
People most often use one of our numbers for Remitly to:
- Receiving a sign-in code while your own number is being set up after arriving in a new country
- Trying the app's corridor and fee information before sending with your own account
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Mobile money: the recipient's number is the account
In many corridors, recipients can receive money straight into a mobile wallet — the services people in many countries use instead of, or alongside, a bank account. For those transfers, the recipient's phone number is not contact information; it identifies the wallet the money goes into.
A mistyped digit can mean a failed transfer or, worse, money in a stranger's wallet. Confirm the number with your recipient, check the country code, and make sure it is registered with the wallet provider you selected. A rented or temporary number must never go in this field.

Sender verification depends on where and how much
Remitly is a regulated money transmitter, and the identity checks it runs on senders depend on the sending country, the destination and the amounts over time. Small first transfers may need little; larger or more frequent ones can require an identity document, and sometimes information about the source of funds.
Those checks tie the account to you. A rented number can receive a sign-in code, but an account you will use every month to support family is better on a number you will keep, so that confirmations and updates keep reaching you.

Cash pickup and what the recipient needs
For cash pickup, the recipient collects the money at a partner location, usually with identification and the transfer's reference number. Their phone number is used to tell them the money is ready. The name you enter must match the recipient's ID exactly, or the pickup can be refused.
The "release fee" and "code" scams
Money-transfer scams often target the recipient: a message says a transfer is being held and asks for a fee or for a code to release it. Remitly does not hold transfers for fees paid to third parties, and nobody from Remitly needs a code from the sender or the recipient. If you are sending money to someone you have met only online, be especially careful: romance and job scams often end with a request to send money abroad.

When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- The sign-in code did not arrive
Check the country code, wait, and request once more. - A mobile-money transfer failed
The recipient's number may be wrong or not registered with that wallet. Confirm it and the provider with the recipient. - The recipient could not collect cash
The name on the transfer must match their ID. Check spelling and order of names. - Remitly asked for identity documents
That is sender verification, based on corridor and amounts. It requires your own documents. - The recipient was asked for a fee to release money
That is a scam. Remitly does not ask recipients to pay third parties.
Working out which case you are in
- Is the number you are entering the recipient's mobile wallet? Yes Confirm every digit with them; never use a rented number there. No It is your own sign-in number.
- Will you send money regularly? Yes Use your own long-term number for the account. No A rented number can bridge a short gap for the sender only.
- Does the recipient's name match their ID exactly? Yes Continue. No Fix it before sending.
- Has anyone asked for a fee or a code to release money? Yes It is a scam; contact Remitly directly. No Carry on.
Before you request another code
- Keep your sender account on your own number if you send regularly

Questions
Which number does Remitly send codes to?
The sender's, to sign in and confirm transfers. The recipient's number is used for updates and, for mobile money, as their wallet.
Does Remitly accept rented numbers?
Sometimes, for the sender's sign-in, depending on the range. Never use one for a recipient.
What if I type the recipient's mobile-money number wrong?
The transfer may fail or reach the wrong wallet. Contact Remitly at once; always double-check the number before sending.
Why does Remitly want my ID?
Money transmitters must verify senders, depending on country, destination and amounts.
My recipient was asked to pay to release the money — is that Remitly?
No. It is a scam. Remitly does not ask recipients to pay third parties.
What if the code never arrives?
If you used one of our numbers, you are not charged; the held amount returns to your balance.
Do you have free Remitly numbers?
Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Remitly usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.
What if Remitly does not send the code?
You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.
How much does a Remitly number cost?
From $4.08, depending on the country. The price shown is the whole price: it is held on your balance and charged only when the SMS arrives.
Can I use the number again later?
No. An activation covers one code. If the account may ask for a code again, keep your own number on it or add an authenticator app.
Which country should I choose for Remitly?
Right now the lowest prices are in Indonesia ($4.08), United Kingdom ($4.09), Israel ($4.10). Where we have at least 100 measured orders the table also shows the delivery rate — when there is one, pick the country with the highest rate.
