A payment account rests on identity, not on a number
Plenty of the apps covered on this site treat a phone number as the whole registration: prove you hold it, and the account exists. PayPal works differently. Behind the phone field sits a linked bank account or card, and behind that sits an identity check that PayPal, as a licensed payment provider, is required to run before letting real money move through the account. The number is one of several contact points PayPal keeps for a person it has already identified through other means.
That ordering changes what a rented number is good for here. It can carry the text message during initial signup, or stand in for a login code on a one-off visit. It cannot stand in for the identity behind the account, and it should not be treated as the thing keeping that account safe once a balance, a linked card or an active transaction history exists. Read the rest of this article as guidance for using a rented number briefly and carefully, not as a route to an anonymous payment account, which PayPal is not built to offer.
People most often use one of our numbers for PayPal to:
- A brief number for the initial signup text before switching to your own
- A one-off login code when travelling without exposing a home number
- Keeping a personal number off a PayPal.me link or invoice others can see
- A privacy layer for a secondary account you fund lightly and control fully
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

A new number, or a new device, invites a closer look
PayPal watches for changes that could mean an account has been taken over: a different phone number on file, a login from a device or location it has not seen before, a password reset requested out of nowhere. Any of these can prompt an extra verification step before the session continues, and in some cases a temporary limitation on the account while PayPal confirms who is actually asking for the change. This is the same logic banks and card issuers use, applied to a phone number as one of the signals being watched.
The practical lesson is about timing, not fear. If you plan to swap a rented number for your own once an account is open, do it early, before any funding source is added or any payment is sent or received. A change made to an account that has not yet handled money costs little. The same change made after a balance exists, or after a linked card has been used, is far more likely to trip a review that then takes time to clear.

A texted code is not PayPal's strongest login option
At checkout in some markets, and during login generally, PayPal can send a one-time code by text message to confirm it is really you. That code works, but it is not the strongest tool PayPal offers for the job. The PayPal app itself can present a login attempt as a push notification you approve or deny directly on a device already signed in, with nothing typed and nothing sent over the phone network for someone else to catch in transit.
The difference matters most for an account with a card or bank account attached. A texted code depends on a phone number staying under your control and on the text actually reaching you, both of which can fail in ways that have nothing to do with PayPal. An approval inside the app depends only on holding the signed-in device. Once a rented number has served its purpose during signup, moving day-to-day login confirmation to the app, or to a number you keep long-term, removes a link in the chain that a rented number was never meant to hold for long.

Sending money asks little; receiving it asks more
An account used only to pay for things online carries a lighter set of requirements than one used to receive money from other people or from buyers. Once an account starts receiving payments regularly, PayPal's own checks and, depending on the country, tax-reporting rules can ask for more from the account holder: confirmed identity documents, a linked bank account for payouts, sometimes additional business information. None of that can be satisfied by a phone number, rented or otherwise, and none of it is something this article helps route around.
If your plan for a PayPal account involves being paid — for freelance work, for items sold, for anything ongoing — build the account around your own real details from the outset rather than layering a rented number underneath it and hoping the rest sorts itself out later. The number was only ever going to help with the first text message. The identity and payout details are what actually let money land in the account and, more importantly, let you get it back out.
An account limitation is PayPal's pause button, not a ban
A "limited" account is PayPal's term for one where some activity, often sending or withdrawing funds, is paused while PayPal reviews something about it: an unusual pattern of payments, a document it needs, a security concern raised by a login or a changed contact detail. It is not the same as a closed account, and it usually resolves once the requested information is provided, but it can be disruptive if it lands while money is mid-transfer or a bill is due.
The phone number on file matters here mainly as one of the channels PayPal may use to reach you during a limitation review, alongside email and the app itself. A number you no longer hold, or a rented one whose rental period has ended, can mean a message from PayPal about clearing a limitation never reaches you. Keeping a number and an email you actually check current on the account is a small step that avoids a slow review turning into a stuck one.
A text asking you to read back a code is the attack
The most common way a PayPal account gets taken over is not a technical break-in; it is a message, often disguised as PayPal itself, asking the account holder to read out or forward a code that just arrived. The message might claim a payment is under review, that the account will be closed within hours, or that a purchase needs confirming right now. The urgency is the tell. PayPal does not need you to speak or send a code to anyone, ever, for any reason.
A one-time code exists to confirm that the person completing an action is the person sitting in that session at that moment. It has no legitimate use once it leaves that screen. If a text, call, email or chat message asks for the code sitting on your phone, the right move is to not share it, end the contact, and check the account directly by opening the PayPal app rather than any link the message supplied.
What this article supports, and what it does not
What we support is straightforward: one person setting up their own PayPal account, using a rented number for the initial text message or an occasional login where privacy matters, then moving to a phone number, an approving device and a recovery email they actually control before the account touches real money either way. That is the full scope of what this article is for.
What we do not support is just as clear. We do not help anyone open a PayPal account under someone else's name, get around an identity or business verification requirement, dodge an account limitation that has been placed for a genuine reason, or regain access to an account that belongs to somebody else. A payment account should be tied to the real identity of the person spending or receiving the money, with a number and recovery method that person genuinely controls once the first login is done.
Installing PayPal and verifying the number
On Android
- Install PayPal from Google Play and open it
- Choose to create a personal or business account and enter an email address
- Enter the rented phone number with the correct country code when asked
- Type the code from the text message on the verification screen before it expires
- Set a strong, unique password and confirm your name and address
- Link a card or bank account only once you plan to actually use the account
- Open Settings, then Security, and turn on login approval through the app itself
- Set a recovery email you check regularly, separate from the phone number
- Move the account to your own long-term number before sending or receiving any money
On iPhone
- Install PayPal from the App Store and open it
- Choose to create a personal or business account and enter an email address
- Enter the rented phone number with the correct country code when asked
- Type the code from the text message on the verification screen before it expires
- Set a strong, unique password and confirm your name and address
- Link a card or bank account only once you plan to actually use the account
- Open Settings, then Security, and turn on login approval through the app itself
- Set a recovery email you check regularly, separate from the phone number
- Move the account to your own long-term number before sending or receiving any money
When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- Several codes were requested in quick succession
Pause for a while rather than requesting again immediately; repeated attempts in a short window tend to push the next code out further, not sooner. - The browsing location and the number's country do not line up
Where possible, use a connection near the number's own country. A clear mismatch between the two is a common reason a text is held back or delayed. - The number's range is one PayPal's texts reach unreliably
Check the country table on this page before buying; PayPal's own delivery checks filter certain ranges regardless of how long you wait for a retry. - The number already has a recent PayPal signup attached
Choose a different number instead of retrying the same one; recent PayPal history on a number is a frequent cause of a delayed or refused code. - The code screen expired before you could type it in
Request a new code rather than reusing an old one; PayPal rejects an expired code even when every digit was correct. Keep the order open for the next one. - A login now asks for extra verification out of nowhere
A new device, a new location or a changed contact detail is the usual trigger. Complete the check if you still hold the number; otherwise use PayPal's own account recovery. - The account shows as limited after a security change
This is the review mechanism described in this article, not a fault in the app. Open the Resolution Center inside PayPal and follow what it asks for. - A text or email claiming to be PayPal is asking for your code
This is the fraud, not a fix. Do not reply with the code, end the contact, and check the account by opening the PayPal app directly.
Working out which case you are in
- Did the signup text land at all? Yes Enter it on the verification screen before it expires. No Check the country table on this page, then try again shortly.
- Will this account send or receive real money? Yes Move to a number, device and recovery email you control before funding it. No A short signup on a rented number is lower-stakes if no money ever moves.
- Is login approval through the app already turned on? Yes Keep using it as the primary method; it does not depend on the phone number. No Turn it on in Settings once the account is verified.
- Is a message asking you to read back a code? Yes Refuse. This is the standard way PayPal accounts get taken over. No Continue as normal, checking the account only through the official app.
- Are you trying to open or recover an account that is not yours? Yes Stop. This article only supports one person setting up their own account. No This guidance applies as intended to your own account.
Before you request another code
- Confirm the rented number is fresh to this order, not left over from a prior one
- Check the country table on this page for how PayPal is delivering to that range today
- Use your real name and address when the account asks; PayPal cross-checks these against payment details
- Turn on login approval through the app rather than leaving text messages as the only option
- Add a recovery email you check often, separate from the number used at signup
- Link a bank account or card only once you are ready to actually use it
- Move to a phone number you control before the account sends or receives any money
- Never read a verification code out to anyone contacting you, whatever they claim to represent
- Change the number on file while the account is unfunded, not after money has moved through it
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own mobile number | Yes | Tied to your real identity with your carrier | Full recovery through the carrier if a device is lost | The baseline PayPal's own identity checks expect |
| A second SIM you keep long-term | Yes | Separate from a primary personal line | Depends on keeping that line active and paid | Fine once the account is verified and in ongoing use |
| An eSIM on an active plan | Usually | Behaves like any other mobile number once verified | Tied to the plan; losing the profile loses the number | Workable if the plan will still exist when needed |
| A prepaid line | Usually | Same as any mobile number once verified | Recovery depends on the line staying topped up | Weak as a long-term choice for a funded account |
| A rented private number like ours | Depends on the range | Fine for a brief signup or a single login | Not a recovery path once its rental period ends | Good for the first text only; replace it before funding |
| The PayPal app's login approval | Not applicable to numbers | Confirmed on a device already signed in | Recovery tied to the device, not a phone number | Stronger everyday choice than a texted code |
| A shared family or office number | Rarely | Codes visible to anyone with access to that line | No individual recovery path for a personal account | Unsuitable for an account tied to one person's money |
| A number belonging to someone else, used with their knowledge | Sometimes | Depends entirely on that person's discretion | They control recovery, not you | Workable only for a shared household account, never for a solo one |

Questions
Does PayPal require a phone number to open an account?
A phone number is asked for during signup alongside an email address, and PayPal uses it to send a one-time code to confirm the number works. It sits next to identity and funding checks rather than replacing them, since PayPal is a regulated payment service rather than a simple messaging signup.
Will PayPal accept a rented or virtual number?
It depends on the number's range and recent history rather than a blanket rule. The table on this page tracks which countries are receiving PayPal texts right now, and a range struggling today can start working again later.
Is it safe to open a PayPal account with a rented number?
For a brief signup where no card is linked and no money moves, the risk is low. Once the account is funded or used to send and receive payments, a rented number becomes the wrong long-term contact method, since losing it can slow a login check or a limitation review right when it matters.
What happens if I change the phone number on my PayPal account?
Changing a contact detail like the phone number can prompt an extra verification step or, in some cases, a temporary limitation while PayPal confirms the request came from the real account holder. The safest time to make that change is before the account holds any funds.
Is a texted code the safest way to log in to PayPal?
It works, but it is not the strongest option. Approving a login directly inside the PayPal app, from a device already signed in, avoids sending a code over text at all. Once a rented number has served the initial signup, moving daily logins to the app is the stronger habit.
What does it mean if PayPal says my account is limited?
A limitation is PayPal pausing some account activity, often sending or withdrawing money, while it reviews something: unusual payment patterns, a requested document, or a security concern tied to a login or contact change. It is not the same as closing the account, and it is generally cleared by providing what the Resolution Center asks for.
Does receiving money on PayPal need more than a phone number?
Yes. Receiving payments regularly can bring identity checks, a linked bank account for payouts and, depending on your country, tax-reporting requirements. None of that is satisfied by a phone number, rented or otherwise, and this article does not cover working around it.
Someone messaged me claiming to be PayPal asking for my code — is that real?
No. Asking you to read out or forward a one-time code is the most common way PayPal accounts are taken over, and no genuine PayPal contact needs to hear it. Do not share the code, and check your account directly by opening the official app.
What actually protects a PayPal account holding money?
Login approval through the app instead of text messages, a recovery email you actually check, and your real identity details matching your payment methods. None of these depend on the number used at signup, which is why they matter more once the account is funded.
Can a rented number help me open a PayPal account under someone else's name?
No, and we do not help with that. PayPal ties every account to a verified identity and matches that identity against funding details; a phone number has no bearing on that check. An account should be opened by, and verified as, the person who actually owns it.
Can I use a rented number to get around an account limitation?
No. A limitation is a review process, not a lock a different phone number can open. It resolves through the documents or information PayPal's Resolution Center actually asks for, and we do not support any shortcut around that review.
If the code never arrives, am I charged for the number?
You are only charged once a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically. Checking the country table before buying avoids picking a range with weak delivery.
