An app whose product is the number

Most apps ask for your number to check that you are a real person. Truecaller asks because numbers are what it is about: when a call comes in, it looks the number up and shows a name, and spam reports from other users decide whether the call is flagged.

Those names come largely from users — from profiles people create and, depending on settings and region, from the contact lists people allow the app to use. That is why your number may already be in Truecaller even if you never installed it.

What happens to a listing on a rented number

When you register, your profile name is attached to your number. On a rented number, that link outlives the rental: the next person to use the number may be shown with your name to the people they call, and spam reports against earlier users may follow the number to them.

For a caller-ID app, that is the opposite of useful. It is one of the rare cases where we suggest not using a rented number at all, unless you only want to see how the app works and remove the profile afterwards.

Verification by missed call

On Android, Truecaller commonly verifies your number by placing a missed call to it and checking that it arrived on the device. That only works when the number is in the phone you are holding. A rented number is not in your phone and receives SMS only, so it can only work where Truecaller offers an SMS code instead.

Staying out of the directory

Truecaller provides an unlisting page on its website where you can ask for your number to be removed from search results. If you have an account, you deactivate it in the app first, then unlist.

People who want privacy often assume the answer is to register with a different number. It is not — your real number can still be in the directory through other people's contacts. Unlisting is the tool that addresses it.

Using Truecaller for its real job

Truecaller is genuinely useful for blocking spam calls and identifying businesses. Installed on your own phone with your own number, it works as intended: calls are checked, spam is flagged, and your profile shows people who you are.

Keep permissions to what you need — Truecaller asks for access to calls, contacts and messages — and review them in your phone's settings.

Installing Truecaller and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. Truecaller waits for a missed call that never comes
   The number is not in your phone. Choose the SMS option, if offered.
2. Your number already shows a name
   It came from the directory, often from someone's contacts. Unlisting removes it from search.
3. Callers see the wrong name for you
   Update your profile name, or report the listing through Truecaller.
4. You want to leave Truecaller completely
   Deactivate the account in the app, then unlist the number on the website.
5. A call shows as spam but it is a business you know
   Spam labels come from user reports; you can report it as not spam.
