Your earnings wait inside the account
When an item sells on Poshmark and the buyer accepts it, the money does not go straight to a bank. It becomes a balance inside the account, which the seller can spend on other items or redeem to a bank account or another payout method. Busy sellers often let a balance build before redeeming it.
That design makes sign-in security a money question. Anyone who can sign in to a closet can, in principle, try to change where that balance goes. Poshmark answers with checks at exactly those moments, and many of those checks are codes sent to the phone number on the account.
People most often use one of our numbers for Poshmark to:
- Opening a buyer account without adding a personal number
- Trying the app before starting a closet
- Keeping a separate buyer account for a household
- Browsing and making offers on a secondary account
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

What the phone codes actually guard
Beyond signup, Poshmark uses the phone number to confirm sign-ins from new devices, to protect changes to the email, password and payout details, and to verify accounts its fraud systems want to check. Each of those is a moment where the account asks "are you really the owner?" and expects the answer on the number it has on file.
A closet whose number has lapsed fails every one of those checks. The balance is still there; the owner simply cannot prove who they are, and a support conversation replaces a thirty-second code.

A closet is a public storefront, and a social one
Poshmark shops are called closets, and they are built to be seen: sellers share listings to followers, join themed "Posh Parties", comment and make offers in public threads. The username, profile photo, listings and ratings are visible to everyone.
The phone number is not. It stays between the seller and Poshmark, and buyers and sellers talk through comments, offers and the app's own messages. The privacy reason to keep a personal number off a closet is therefore modest — the security reason to keep a real, lasting number on it is strong.

Prepaid labels mean nobody needs your number
For each sale, Poshmark emails the seller a prepaid shipping label. The seller packs the item, prints the label and drops it off; the buyer tracks it inside the app. There is no step in that flow where buyer and seller exchange phone numbers.
That is useful for buyers who want a private number on their account, and it is also the reason any request to "just text me" or "call me to arrange delivery" deserves suspicion. The normal Poshmark sale never needs it.
The US, Canada and Australia are separate Poshmarks
Poshmark runs separate marketplaces for the United States, Canada and Australia, each with its own currency, shipping carrier and payout options. A closet belongs to one of them. The phone number used to verify it is expected to come from the same country, because codes, shipping and payouts all stay inside that market.
The two scams every Poshmark seller meets
The first is the code request: a "buyer" asks the seller to confirm they are real by reading back a code they are about to receive. The code is for the seller's own account, or for a messaging or calling service being set up on the seller's number, and sharing it hands control to the scammer.
The second is the off-app payment: an offer to pay by a payment app or a bank transfer "to avoid fees", followed by a fake payment confirmation. Poshmark's protection covers purchases made through Poshmark only. Refusing both requests, every time, avoids nearly all of the losses sellers report.
How buying is protected, and why it only works in the app
Poshmark holds the buyer's payment until the item is delivered and accepted. After delivery there is a short window to report a problem — an item that is not as described, damaged or not authentic — and Poshmark reviews the case before the seller is paid. If nothing is reported in that window, the order is accepted automatically.
That protection is the reason off-app payments are refused on principle: an item paid for through a payment app or a bank transfer never enters the process that can hold the money back. Check an item as soon as it arrives, and report any problem inside the window rather than negotiating privately with the seller.
Offers, bundles and comments happen in public
Negotiation on Poshmark mostly happens through offers and bundle discounts, and questions are often asked in a listing's comments where other shoppers can read them. That openness is useful, but it also means nothing personal belongs in a comment — no phone number, no email, no address. Sellers who want to share details privately can use the app's own offer and messaging features.
Installing Poshmark and verifying the number
On Android
- Install Poshmark from Google Play and choose your country
- Create the account with email or a linked sign-in
- Enter the rented number from the same country when asked, and type the SMS code
- Use the account to buy and make offers
- Keep comments, offers and payment inside the app
- If you start selling, move the account to a number you will keep before adding payout details
- Replace the number in settings before the rental ends if you keep the account
On iPhone
- Install Poshmark from the App Store and choose your country
- Create the account with email or a linked sign-in
- Enter the rented number from the same country when asked, and type the SMS code
- Use the account to buy and make offers
- Keep comments, offers and payment inside the app
- If you start selling, move the account to a number you will keep before adding payout details
- Replace the number in settings before the rental ends if you keep the account
When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- No code arrived at signup
Check the country code and remove any leading zero, then wait before requesting again. If it still fails, try another row from the table. - The number is from a different country than your Poshmark site
Use a number from the same country as the Poshmark market you signed up on. - A code request appeared on a new phone and the rental has ended
Poshmark confirms new devices through the number on file. Contact Poshmark support; next time update the number before the rental ends. - Changing payout details asks for a code
That is the protection for your balance working as intended. It needs the number on the account, which is why a selling closet should use one you keep. - A buyer wants to pay outside Poshmark
Decline. Off-app payments are not covered, and fake payment screenshots are the usual follow-up. - Someone asked you to read out a verification code
Refuse and block them. The code protects your account or your number, and sharing it gives someone else control. - Several codes were requested quickly
Only the latest is valid, and repeated requests are slowed down. Wait, then use the newest code.
Working out which case you are in
- Will this account hold sales earnings? Yes Use a number you will keep; the balance is protected by codes to it. No A rented number can cover a buyer account.
- Is the number from the same country as your Poshmark site? Yes Continue. No Switch to a number from that country.
- Has anyone asked to pay or talk outside the app? Yes Decline; keep everything in Poshmark. No Carry on.
- Has anyone asked for a code? Yes Refuse and report. No Nothing to do.
- Will you keep this account after the rental? Yes Update the number in settings before the rental ends. No Finish your purchase and leave it.
Before you request another code
- Match the number to your Poshmark country
- Enter the code straight away and use only the newest one
- Keep offers, comments and payment inside the app
- Never share a code, whoever asks
- Move a selling closet to a number you will keep before adding payout details
- Update the number before a rental ends if the account stays
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own mobile number | Yes | Private from buyers; tied to you by your carrier | Full protection for the balance | The right choice for any closet that sells |
| A second line for selling | Yes | Keeps the closet apart from personal contacts | Lasts as long as the line does | Good for a side business |
| A rented private number like ours | Depends on the range | Keeps a personal line off a buyer account | Ends with the rental | Buyer accounts only; not a closet holding money |
| A public SMS inbox | Rarely | None — anyone sees the code | None | Never for an account connected to payouts |

Questions
Why does Poshmark need my phone number?
To verify the account and to confirm the owner at sensitive moments — new devices and changes to email, password or payout details.
Does Poshmark accept rented numbers?
Sometimes, depending on the range. The table on this page shows which countries are currently getting Poshmark codes through our numbers.
Can buyers see my number?
No. Buyers and sellers talk through comments and offers, and shipping uses Poshmark's prepaid labels, so no numbers are exchanged.
Is a rented number OK for a closet that sells?
We advise against it. Earnings sit in the account until redeemed, and the codes that protect that balance go to the number on file.
Where does my money go after a sale?
Into your Poshmark balance, from which you can redeem it to a payout method or spend it in the app.
Can I use a Canadian number on Poshmark US?
The US, Canadian and Australian sites are separate markets. Use a number from the same country as your Poshmark site.
A buyer asked me for a verification code — is that normal?
No. It is a takeover scam. Do not share the code and report the buyer.
Can I change my number on Poshmark?
Yes, in account settings, with a code to the new number. Do it before any rented number expires.
What if the code never arrives?
You are not charged. When no SMS arrives before the time limit, the held amount goes back to your balance.
Does the shipping label show my phone number?
Poshmark generates the label itself; there is no reason for buyer and seller to swap phone numbers for a normal sale.
Do you have free Poshmark numbers?
Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Poshmark usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.
What if Poshmark does not send the code?
You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.
