Why Zalo matters in Vietnam

In Vietnam, Zalo is where people are: families, landlords, schools, delivery drivers, small shops and many workplaces use it, and some public services send notices through official accounts on it. Visitors and new residents often find they need it within days.

Because people find each other by phone number, the number on your Zalo is also how others reach you — which is why a stable number matters more than a quick code.

People most often use one of our numbers for Zalo to:

• Trying Zalo or joining a short-term group without a Vietnamese SIM yet
• Keeping a personal number private while contacting sellers or services in Vietnam

The rule on authenticated accounts

Rules that took effect in Vietnam at the end of 2024 require users of social networks to authenticate their accounts, normally with a Vietnamese mobile number, which is itself registered to a person. Services operating in Vietnam, Zalo among them, ask users to comply, and accounts that are not authenticated can be limited.

How strictly this is applied, and what options exist for foreigners, has been changing. The safe assumption for anyone living in Vietnam is that a local SIM registered in your name is the expected basis for the account.

Foreign and rented numbers

Zalo does accept numbers from other countries, and people abroad use it to keep in touch with family in Vietnam. Delivery of codes to foreign numbers is less consistent than to Vietnamese ones, and some ranges do not receive them at all.

A rented number can be enough to try Zalo or to join a group for a short project. For anything longer, move the account to a number you will keep.

PC and web sign in through the phone

Zalo PC and Zalo Web usually sign in by scanning a QR code with the Zalo app on your phone. That keeps the phone as the main device and makes the computer an extension of it. If you lose access to the phone account, the computer sessions follow.

Backups and changing the number

Zalo offers a chat backup you can restore on a new phone. Make one before changing phones, and before changing numbers. Changing the phone number on the account is done from settings while the old number still works; after that, contacts who saved your old number may need to be told.

Impersonation and fake officials

Common Zalo scams impersonate police, tax officers, banks or delivery companies, or come from a friend's hijacked account asking for money or a code. Official bodies do not ask for verification codes or payments through Zalo chats. Call the person or office on a number you already trust.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No code arrived on a foreign number
   Foreign delivery is less consistent. Try another range, or a Vietnamese number.
2. Zalo asks you to authenticate the account
   That follows Vietnamese rules; use a Vietnamese number or the identity option Zalo offers.
3. The number is already on Zalo
   Use a fresh number.
4. Zalo PC will not sign in
   Scan the QR code with the Zalo app on your phone.
5. Someone claiming to be an official asks for a code
   Refuse and contact the office directly.

Working out which case you are in

1. Do you live or work in Vietnam? Yes Use a Vietnamese SIM in your own name. No A foreign or rented number can cover occasional use.
2. Did the code arrive? Yes Finish setup and turn on backup. No Try another range.
3. Will you keep this account? Yes Change to a number you keep before the rental ends. No Let it lapse.
4. Did someone ask for money or a code? Yes Verify by calling a known number. No Carry on.

• Decide whether you need Zalo for daily life in Vietnam
• Use a Vietnamese number in your name for long-term use
• Turn on chat backup
• Change numbers while the old one still works
• Tell contacts when your number changes
• Never share a code
