OfferUp is about meeting people you have never met
Most OfferUp deals end the same way: two people who met in a chat thread an hour ago stand in a parking lot and swap an item for money. Everything the app asks you to verify is there to make that moment a little less of a gamble for both sides, and each check answers a different question about the person on the other end.
The phone check answers "is this a reachable, one-person account rather than a batch of throwaways?" The identity badge answers "is this a real person whose ID matches their face?" Ratings answer "how did their previous deals go?" A rented number only ever touches the first of the three.
People most often use one of our numbers for OfferUp to:
- Keeping a personal number away from strangers you will meet for a sale
- Buying or selling a single item without adding your main line
- Separating a side-hustle reselling account from personal contacts
- Trying OfferUp before tying a long-term number to it
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

The phone check and the ID badge are different things
Confirming a phone number on OfferUp is quick: enter a US number, receive a code, type it in. It shows the account is tied to a working number and helps OfferUp limit how many accounts one person runs.
OfferUp's identity verification is a separate step that asks for a government-issued ID and a photo of the person holding the account, and it earns a badge buyers can see. That check is about you, not about any phone line, and it must be completed with your own documents. A rented number neither helps nor hurts it.

Keep every message in OfferUp chat
Buyers often ask to "just text" to arrange a pickup. Moving the conversation to text messages means your number — rented or personal — is now in a stranger's phone, and the conversation leaves the place where OfferUp could review it if something goes wrong.
The in-app chat already does what text messages would: it notifies you, keeps photos and addresses together, and shows the other person's profile and ratings on the same screen. Staying there costs nothing and keeps a record.

Meet where there are people and cameras
For local deals, OfferUp points users to public meeting places, and many police stations and shopping centres offer well-lit, camera-covered areas set aside for exactly this. Bring someone with you for larger items, check the item before paying, and count cash in the open.
None of this depends on the phone number, but it is where the choice of number meets real life: a stranger you met through a private number cannot keep texting your personal phone after the deal is done.
Shipped and paid in the app, or local and in cash
OfferUp supports nationwide shipping, paid through the app, with its own protection if the item does not arrive or is not as described. A local cash deal has no such protection: once the money changes hands, the platform has nothing to reverse.
That difference is worth more than any verification step. For a phone, a laptop or anything worth enough to scam, paying through the app is the safer way to buy.
"Send me the code to prove you're real"
The most common OfferUp scam does not involve a fake item at all. A "buyer" says they need to confirm the seller is genuine and asks them to read back a code that has just arrived by text. That code was triggered by the scammer — often to register an internet phone number or a messaging account on the seller's number, or to sign into the seller's own account.
No legitimate buyer needs a code from you. The moment someone asks for one, the conversation is over.
Buying a used phone: check the IMEI, not just the screen
Phones, tablets and laptops are among the most listed items on OfferUp and among the most disputed. A phone that looks perfect can be reported lost or stolen, still financed on a carrier plan, or locked to someone else's account, and any of those can leave it unusable days after the sale.
Before paying, ask for the device's IMEI (shown under settings or by dialling *#06#), run it through a carrier or independent blacklist check, and make sure the seller signs out of their Apple or Google account in front of you so the activation lock is gone. A seller who will not do those things in a public place is telling you something about the phone.
When a deal goes wrong, the chat is your evidence
OfferUp can review a reported account using the conversation it holds. Screenshots of text messages exchanged outside the app are harder to rely on and easy to dispute. Reporting from inside the thread, with the listing still attached, gives OfferUp what it needs to act on the other account.

- Type the SMS code as soon as it arrives
- Complete OfferUp's ID verification with your own documents if you want the badge

- Meet at a public spot for local deals, or ship and pay through the app

When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- No code arrived
Check the number is a US number entered with +1 and ten digits. Wait before trying again, then try another range if it still fails. - The number was refused
It may already be on another OfferUp account. Use a fresh number. - The ID verification failed
That check compares your ID and your photo; the phone number plays no part. Retake the photos in good light with your own ID. - A buyer insists on texting instead of using chat
Keep the conversation in the app. A buyer who will not use OfferUp chat is a warning sign on its own. - Someone asked for a code you received
Refuse. It is a takeover attempt on your account or your number. - The code expired before you entered it
Request one new code, wait for it, and type it straight away. Older codes stop working when a new one is sent.
Working out which case you are in
- Are you meeting the other person in person? Yes Keep your personal number out of it and meet in a public spot. No Ship and pay through the app for its protection.
- Do you want the identity badge? Yes Complete ID verification with your own documents; the number is irrelevant to it. No The phone check alone is enough to use OfferUp.
- Has someone asked to move to text messages? Yes Stay in OfferUp chat. No Carry on in the app.
- Has someone asked for a code? Yes End the conversation and report them. No Nothing to do.
- Will you keep this account? Yes Update the number before the rental ends. No Finish the deal and leave it.
Before you request another code
- Use a US number entered with +1
- Complete ID verification with your own documents if you want the badge
- Keep every message in OfferUp chat
- Meet in a public place with cameras for local deals
- Pay through the app for anything valuable
- Never share a verification code
- Update the number before the rental ends if you keep the account
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own mobile number | Yes | Visible only to OfferUp, unless you text strangers from it | Full | Fine if you keep every conversation in chat |
| A second line for selling | Yes | Keeps buyers apart from your personal contacts | Lasts with the line | Good for regular sellers |
| A rented US number like ours | Depends on the range | Your personal line stays out of strangers' threads | Ends with the rental | Good for a short run of buying or selling |
| A free internet calling number | Varies | Private, but often flagged by apps as VoIP | Depends on the provider | Often refused for verification |
| A public SMS inbox | Rarely | None | None | Never for an account strangers will meet you through |

Questions
Does OfferUp require a phone number?
OfferUp asks accounts to confirm a phone number with an SMS code. It is separate from the optional identity verification that earns a profile badge.
Does OfferUp accept rented or virtual numbers?
Sometimes, depending on the range. The table on this page shows which US ranges are currently getting OfferUp codes.
Does the ID badge need my phone number?
No. It checks a government ID and a photo of you. Use your own documents; the number is not part of it.
Should I give buyers my phone number?
There is no need. OfferUp chat handles arrangements and keeps a record the platform can review.
A buyer asked for the code OfferUp sent me — is that normal?
No. It is a scam aimed at your account or at registering a service on your number. Never share the code.
Is paying cash at a meetup safe?
It carries no platform protection. For valuable items, shipping and paying through the app is safer.
Can I use OfferUp outside the United States?
OfferUp serves the US market and expects a US number.
Can I change my number later?
Yes, in account settings. Do it before a rented number expires if you keep the account.
What if the code never arrives?
You are not charged. The held amount returns to your balance when no SMS arrives in time.
Is renting a number against OfferUp's rules?
OfferUp expects one account per person. We support using a private number for your own account and do not support running multiple accounts or evading bans.
Do you have free OfferUp numbers?
Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so OfferUp usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.
What if OfferUp does not send the code?
You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.
