99 serves riders in Brazil, and most of its users sign up with a Brazilian mobile number. The app accepts other country codes, but codes to foreign numbers arrive less reliably, and some ranges do not receive them at all.

If you are staying in Brazil for more than a short visit, a local SIM makes 99, and most other Brazilian apps, much easier. For a short visit, a number that receives the code and that you can still use during the trip is enough.

The number matters during the ride

Once a driver accepts, they may message or call you to find the pickup point, especially in busy areas, at airports or when a street has no clear number. If the number on the account cannot be reached, the driver may cancel and you may be charged a cancellation fee.

A rented number receives text messages for a short time. It cannot answer calls, and it will not help the driver find you.

Check the car before you get in

The app shows the driver's name, photo, car model, colour and plate. Match all of them before you open the door. If anything differs, do not get in and report it in the app.

Share your trip with someone you trust, and know where the app's emergency button is. These features work best when your account details, including the number, are current.

Payment options

Depending on the city, 99 accepts cards, cash and other local methods. Paying in the app gives you a receipt and a clear record if you need to dispute a fare. If a driver asks for extra payment outside the app, decline and report it.

Airports, events and busy streets

Pickups go wrong most often where many cars stop at once: airport arrivals, stadium exits, bus terminals and large shopping centres. Airports in Brazil often have marked pickup zones for app rides, and the app may direct you to one. Walk to it before requesting, so the driver is not circling while you search.

At events, move a block or two away from the crowd before requesting a ride. It is quicker for the driver and easier to match the plate. In all of these places the driver is likely to message or call, which is another reason the number on your account must be one you can answer.

Keeping the account safe

A ride-hailing account holds a saved card and your trip history. Scammers sometimes pose as 99 support and ask for the SMS code to "fix" a problem. That code signs them in to your account. 99 support works through the app, and nobody from 99 needs your code.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No SMS arrived on a foreign number
   Foreign delivery is less reliable. Try another range or a Brazilian SIM.
2. The driver could not find you
   Keep the phone on and reachable, and send a precise pickup note in the app.
3. You were charged a cancellation fee
   Contest it in the app if the driver did not arrive or could not reach you through no fault of yours.
4. The car or plate does not match
   Do not get in. Cancel and report it.
5. Someone claiming to be 99 support asks for your code
   Refuse. Support does not need it.

2. Can you be reached while you wait? Yes Request the ride. No Fix that first, or drivers may cancel.
