Why people in the UAE use Botim

For years, voice and video calls through many popular messaging apps have been restricted in the UAE, while chat still worked. Licensed apps like Botim filled the gap, and residents, especially the large expatriate population, use it to call family around the world. People abroad install it to call relatives who live in the UAE.

Registration by phone number

Botim sends a code to the number you enter, and that number becomes your identity in the app. Contacts who have your number can find you. Registering the same number on a new phone moves the account there.

A rented number works for registration where the range is accepted, but the account depends on it. If you plan to keep using Botim, change to a number you keep while the rental is active.

Payments need your identity

Botim's money features, such as wallets, bill payments and international transfers, are regulated financial services. They require identity verification, typically with an Emirates ID for residents, and payment methods in your own name. A phone number, rented or not, does not stand in for that.

The shared-code takeover

As with WhatsApp, the common attack is a message asking you to forward the code you "accidentally" received. It often comes from a friend's hijacked account or from someone posing as a delivery company or bank. The code registers your number on their phone. Never share it.

Calling family abroad

Both sides need Botim installed for app-to-app calls. Call quality depends on the connection at both ends. For numbers that do not have Botim, calling features may use paid credit. Check the rates in the app before calling landlines or mobiles directly.

Privacy settings

Review who can see your profile photo, status and last-seen time, and who can add you to groups. As with any messenger, block and report unknown contacts who send links or ask for money.

Job offers are a common lure in the region: messages promising well-paid work in the UAE in return for a "visa fee" or "processing fee". Genuine employers do not ask candidates to pay through a messenger. Check any offer with the company directly.

Keeping the account through a number change

If you leave the UAE or change your number, use the app's number-change option while the old number still receives codes, so your contacts and history follow you. Back up chats if the app offers it. An account left on a number you no longer have can be registered by whoever gets that number next, along with anything tied to it.

Installing Botim and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The code did not arrive
   Check the country code, wait and request again, or try another range.
2. Payment features ask for Emirates ID
   That is required for regulated money services.
3. A contact asks you to forward a code
   Refuse. It would give them your account.
4. Calls are poor quality
   Check the connection at both ends.
5. You lost access after changing number
   Register again with the new number. Move accounts before changing numbers next time.
