Airtel Thanks shows your plan, data left, bills and offers, and lets you recharge, pay and manage services. It signs you in by sending an OTP to your Airtel number, which proves you hold the SIM.

That is why this page recommends against using any other number. The account is the line. Without an Airtel number, there is no account to manage beyond paying for someone else.

KYC: why SIMs are tied to people

In India, a mobile connection is issued only after the subscriber's identity is verified, usually digitally with Aadhaar or in person with documents. The same applies to a replacement SIM. That makes a mobile number in India a strong link to a real person, which is why banks and payment apps rely on OTPs to it.

The "KYC expired" fraud

A very common scam in India: a text or call says your SIM's KYC has expired, or the SIM will be blocked within hours, and gives a number to call. The "agent" then asks for an OTP, asks you to install a screen-sharing app, or asks for a small payment through a link. With those, fraudsters can take over the SIM or your UPI and bank accounts.

Airtel does not ask for OTPs or remote access by phone. If you are unsure, contact Airtel yourself through the app, the official website or a store.

SIM swaps

If someone gets a replacement SIM for your number, they receive your OTPs: for banks, UPI apps, email and more. Airtel requires identity checks for replacements, and phones usually lose signal when a swap happens. If your phone suddenly shows no service for no reason, contact Airtel at once.

Why your Airtel OTPs matter beyond Airtel

In India, the mobile number is the key to much more than the phone company. Bank transactions, UPI payment apps, Aadhaar services and many online accounts send OTPs to it. Anyone who controls your SIM, through a swap or by getting you to share OTPs, can often reach all of those.

That is why fraud around Airtel accounts is so persistent. The prize is rarely the mobile account itself. It is everything the number unlocks. Treat every OTP as if it were a bank PIN.

Recharging someone else's number

You can pay for another Airtel number's recharge through Airtel's website or app, or through payment apps. That does not need an account on their number, just the number and a payment. It is the most common reason people without an Airtel line interact with Airtel at all.

Installing Airtel and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The OTP did not arrive
   Check that the Airtel SIM is in the phone and has signal, then request again.
2. A message says your KYC has expired
   Treat it as fraud. Do not call numbers in it. Contact Airtel yourself.
3. Your phone suddenly has no service
   It may be a SIM swap. Contact Airtel from another phone immediately.
4. A caller asks you to install an app
   Refuse. Screen-sharing apps let fraudsters see your OTPs.
5. You want to recharge someone else's Airtel number
   Use Airtel's recharge option or a payment app with their number.

Working out which case you are in

1. Do you have an Airtel SIM? Yes Sign in with it. No There is nothing for the app to manage. Recharge others without an account.
2. Did someone say your KYC expired? Yes Ignore it. Contact Airtel yourself. No Carry on.
3. Did your phone lose service suddenly? Yes Check for a SIM swap. No Good.
4. Did anyone ask for an OTP? Yes Refuse. No Carry on.
