The real-name rule behind the phone question

Chinese law requires online services to confirm the real identity of users who post, publish or use certain features. Services usually meet that requirement through the phone number, because mainland SIM cards can only be bought with identification and are registered to the buyer.

That is the context for every phone prompt on Baidu. When a feature asks you to bind a phone, it is not only checking that the number receives texts; it is using the number as the link to a person.

International numbers: what they open

Baidu's sign-up accepts numbers from a set of countries outside mainland China. An account opened that way can usually search with history, save maps and, in many cases, receive files shared through Netdisk.

Where limits appear is publishing: posting in Tieba, uploading, and some Netdisk features may ask for a mainland number or further checks. Which exact features, and when, has changed over the years, so treat a basic international account as a reader's account.

Baidu Netdisk and shared files

The most common reason people outside China want a Baidu account is a Netdisk link: a course, a dataset or a set of documents someone shared there. Opening those links often requires signing in, and downloading large files is slow on free accounts, with faster speeds on paid membership.

The Netdisk client for your computer and phone signs in with the same Baidu account. Store the password somewhere safe; recovering a Baidu account without the bound phone is difficult from abroad.

Tieba forums

Tieba is a huge set of topic forums. Reading does not need an account; posting does, and posting is exactly the kind of activity the real-name rules cover. Expect to be asked to bind a phone before your first post, and expect individual forums to have their own moderation.

Keeping access to the account

A Baidu account opened with a rented number depends on that number for recovery and for many security prompts. If the account holds files or history you care about, set a strong password, note the account name, and replace the number with one you control when you can. If you cannot, treat the account as disposable and keep copies of anything important elsewhere.

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The country of the number is not offered
   Baidu accepts a limited set of international codes. Choose a number from one it lists.
2. No SMS arrived
   Wait, check the country code, and request once more; try another range if it still fails.
3. Posting or uploading asks for a mainland number
   That follows the real-name rules. Use the account for reading and downloading.
4. Netdisk downloads are very slow
   Free accounts are speed-limited; that is not a verification problem.
5. You cannot recover the account
   Recovery relies on the bound phone. Keep the password and account name safe.
