What an owner login controls

Whoever holds the owner login can change the bank account payouts go to, export the customer list, issue refunds, install apps with wide access and transfer the store. Attackers know this. Phishing emails styled as Shopify notices and SIM-swap attempts against store owners are both common.

The phone number question therefore comes down to one thing: how the second step of your login is protected.

Choosing the second step

Shopify's two-step authentication supports an authenticator app, security keys and passkeys, and text messages. The first two keep the code or key on a device you hold, so they are not affected by what happens to a phone number. SMS depends on the number staying yours and on your carrier refusing a SIM swap.

For an owner account, set up an authenticator app or a security key, and keep SMS only as an extra method if you add it at all. If you created the account with a temporary number, switch the two-step method before the store takes its first order.

Recovery codes

When you turn on two-step authentication, Shopify gives you recovery codes. Each one works once and gets you in if your phone or key is lost. Print them or store them in a password manager, somewhere that does not depend on the same phone.

Without them, recovery goes through Shopify support, which will check that you are the owner. That takes time, and your store is running while you wait.

Staff and collaborators get their own logins

Shopify lets you add staff with specific permissions and give agencies collaborator access. Each person uses their own login and their own two-step method. Sharing the owner login, or putting a shared number on it so several people can receive codes, removes that control and leaves no record of who did what.

Payouts need the business's real details

To receive money through Shopify Payments, you provide business and personal identity details and a bank account. Those are checked, and they belong to the owner. A phone number does not stand in for any of it, and payouts can be held if details do not match.

Fake Shopify notices

Owners receive emails claiming a store will be closed, a payment failed or a policy was broken, with a link to "resolve" it. The link leads to a fake login page that takes your password and code. Open the admin directly instead of following links, and never give a two-step code to anyone, including someone who says they work for Shopify.

Installing Shopify and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The SMS code did not arrive
   Check the number and country code, or use your authenticator app or recovery code.
2. You lost the phone with the authenticator
   Use a recovery code, then set up two-step authentication again.
3. You have no recovery codes and no device
   Contact Shopify support and be ready to prove you own the store.
4. Payouts are on hold
   Check that your business, identity and bank details are complete and consistent.
5. An email says your store will be closed
   Do not click. Open the admin directly and check for notices.

3. Do others need access? Yes Add them as staff with their own logins. No Keep the owner login private.
