The number is not the login, the authenticator is

Steam lets someone make an account and buy a game without ever adding a phone number. What the number is actually for is switching on Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, a code generator tied to the Steam mobile app that Valve treats as the account's real second layer of protection. Password alone gets you in; the authenticator is what stops someone else from getting in with a stolen password.

Adding a phone number is the enrollment step for that authenticator, not a parallel requirement. Steam sends a text to confirm the number belongs to whoever is setting it up, and once that check passes, the authenticator itself takes over generating codes in the app — the phone number's job at that point is mostly done, except for one thing covered further down: it is also how the authenticator gets taken back off.

People most often use one of our numbers for Steam to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Why trading gets slower right after you turn this on

Once Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is active, trades and market listings on the account start carrying a waiting period that is measured from how long the authenticator has been running continuously, not from the account's age or how much has been spent on it. This is Steam's own anti-theft design: a stolen account with a freshly added authenticator still cannot move items out instantly, which is exactly the window that discourages the theft in the first place.

The practical effect is that a rented number does not buy instant trading freedom the moment it is added. The exact length of that hold is set by Steam and does change over time, so this page states that it exists rather than naming a number that could be wrong by the time you read it — plan around the fact of a waiting period, not a guess at its length.

A library of purchases is not something to gamble on a rented number

A locked Facebook or Discord account is annoying to lose; a locked Steam account can mean every game ever bought on it becomes unreachable. Valve does not treat account recovery the way a social network does, because there is no equivalent of "just make a new one" — the games are attached to that one account's purchase history, and a new account starts with nothing.

That is the reason this page is blunt: do not build a library you care about on top of a number you are renting for a single verification step. If Steam Guard is worth having on an account with real purchases, it is worth anchoring to a phone number you actually control long-term, because the authenticator and the recovery path both eventually come back to that number.

SMS confirms the number, and SMS is how you take the authenticator off again

Two separate moments use a text message on Steam: confirming the number when Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is first enabled, and removing the authenticator later, which Valve also verifies by text to the number on file. If that number still works, removal is a routine settings step. If it does not, Valve's removal process gets considerably harder, because the whole design is meant to stop a thief from turning the authenticator off just as much as it protects the account otherwise.

This is the sequence to be honest about: a rented number lapses, the authenticator is still active, and now the one channel Valve trusts for turning it off is gone. It is not unrecoverable, but it is slow and it asks for real proof of ownership. Keep the number active for as long as the authenticator stays on, or move the authenticator to a number you control before the rented one expires.

Country, pricing and family sharing follow the account, not the moment

A Steam account's country is set from information Valve collects when the account is established and used, and it decides which currency games are priced in and which regional promotions apply. It is not a field you flip whenever convenient, and Steam has controls specifically aimed at stopping people from shopping in one region's prices while living in another.

Family sharing works similarly: it is built around a small set of trusted devices and accounts, not around whichever phone number happens to be active that week. None of this is about the phone number directly, but it is part of why the account as a whole deserves more permanence than a rented number gives it, and this page does not offer guidance for working around regional pricing.

Fake trade offers and fake login pages, not the number, are the usual way accounts get taken

Most Steam account theft does not start with a phone number problem at all. It starts with a trade offer, a link to a "skin giveaway," or a login page built to look exactly like Steam's, sent through chat or a spoofed community group. Someone enters their password and Steam Guard code into the fake page, and both are handed straight to the attacker in real time.

A phone number and an active authenticator raise the cost of that attack but do not remove it, because a convincing enough fake page can ask for the authenticator code too. The habit that actually protects the account is checking the address bar before typing a password anywhere, and treating an unsolicited trade offer with an outside link as the scam it almost always is.

What this page will not help with

Buying and selling Steam accounts is against Valve's terms, and a rented number that exists to help move an account between owners is not something we provide guidance for. The same goes for using a number to dodge a VAC or trade ban, or to get around the regional pricing controls described above.

What we do support is one person setting up phone verification on their own account, to enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator the way Valve intends. If the goal is anything else — evading a ban, laundering a stolen account's history, or arbitraging regional prices — the honest answer is that a rented number was never going to solve it, and we are not the tool for trying.

Installing Steam and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install the Steam Mobile app from Google Play and sign in to the account that needs verification
  2. Open the app menu and choose Steam Guard, then Add Authenticator
  3. When asked for a phone number, enter the rented number with its country code exactly as issued
  4. Wait for the SMS code and enter it in the app to confirm the number
  5. Steam issues a Revocation Code on screen — write it down before continuing, since it is the fallback if the phone is ever lost
  6. Confirm Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator now shows as active in the app
  7. Expect trades and market listings to carry a waiting period from this point, tied to how long the authenticator has run
  8. Note that removing the authenticator later will ask for a text to this same number, so do not let it lapse while the authenticator is on

On iPhone

  1. Install the Steam Mobile app from the App Store and sign in to the account that needs verification

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The number is refused when adding it to Steam Guard
Some virtual and VoIP ranges are turned away outright at this step. There is no consistent list of which ranges work; if one number is refused, a genuinely mobile-rated number is the more reliable next attempt.
  2. The SMS confirmation code never arrives
Check the country table on this page for how that range is delivering right now. If nothing arrives before the order window closes, it is refunded automatically and worth trying a different country.
  3. Trades or market listings are stuck in a holding period after adding the authenticator
This is expected. The hold is measured from how long the authenticator has been continuously active, and it eases with time rather than with a support request.
  4. The number is already attached to a different Steam account
Steam holds one phone number to one account at a time for this purpose. Remove it from the other account first, or use a different number here.
  5. The authenticator needs to come off but the number is no longer reachable
Steam's removal process verifies by text to the number on file. Without access to it, expect Valve's recovery process to take longer and to ask for detailed proof the account is yours.
  6. A trade offer or login page is asking for the Steam Guard code directly
Stop and close it. Steam never needs the code sent through chat or a third-party page; this is the standard phishing pattern that targets traders specifically.
  7. Steam flags the login as coming from an unfamiliar location
This is a routine check tied to the connection, not the phone number. Confirming through the authenticator or an emailed code resolves it without needing a new number.
  8. The account's country looks wrong or prices show in the wrong currency
This follows account history, not the phone number just added, and is not something this page changes. Steam's own support handles genuine country corrections.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Are you adding a number to enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator? Yes Use a number you can keep reachable for as long as the authenticator stays on. No A phone number is not required just to buy or play a game on Steam.
  2. Was the number refused the moment it was entered? Yes That range is not accepted here; try a genuinely mobile-rated number. No Wait for the SMS code and confirm it before the screen times out.
  3. Is a trade or market listing stuck in a waiting period? Yes That is the activity hold tied to the authenticator's uptime, not a fault to fix. No Check whether Steam Guard is actually active on the account.
  4. Do you still have access to the number that enabled the authenticator? Yes Removal or changes go smoothly through that number. No Expect a slower Valve recovery process asking for proof of ownership.
  5. Is the goal to move an account between owners or dodge a ban? Yes This page and this service do not support that; stop here. No Verification here is for setting up your own account's security properly.

Questions

Does Steam require a phone number to make an account or buy games?

No. An account and purchases work without ever adding one. A phone number is only needed to enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, which is optional but strongly recommended for account security.

Does Steam accept virtual or rented numbers for Steam Guard?

Inconsistently. Some rented ranges are accepted and some are refused at the point of entry, and there is no reliable published list. A genuinely mobile-rated number is the more dependable choice.

Why is trading blocked right after I turn on the authenticator?

Steam holds trades and market listings for a period measured from how long the authenticator has been continuously active, as a deliberate anti-theft measure. The period varies and easing it just takes time, not a support request.

Can I keep playing and trading after the rented number expires?

Playing, yes. Trading depends on the authenticator staying active, and removing or replacing the authenticator later needs a working text to the number that added it, so losing that number can complicate things.

What happens if I lose the number and need to remove the authenticator?

Valve's removal process verifies through the phone on file, so without it you go through a slower recovery process that asks for real proof the account belongs to you. It is not instant.

Can I use one number for two Steam accounts?

No, not at the same time. A phone number is tied to one account's Steam Guard setup at a time and has to be removed from the first before it verifies a second.

Is a Steam account recoverable the way a Facebook or Instagram account is?

Not in the same way. Valve leans on purchase history and account details rather than a quick support-ticket reset, which is why a games library should not be anchored to a number you only rent briefly.

Does the account's country change if I verify with a foreign number?

Not directly. Steam's regional pricing and currency follow the account's established history, not a phone number added for Steam Guard, and this page gives no guidance for working around regional pricing.

How do most Steam accounts actually get stolen?

Usually through phishing: a fake trade offer or a login page built to look like Steam's, where someone types their password and authenticator code into the wrong site. The number itself is rarely the weak point.

What if the SMS code never arrives — am I charged?

You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number. An order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically, and checking the country table beforehand avoids a weak route.

Can I remove Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator once it is on?

Yes, through the Steam Mobile app, and Valve verifies the removal by text to the number on file. Keep that number reachable, or use the Revocation Code Steam gave you when it was added.

Will this help me get around a VAC ban or trade ban?

No, and this page will not help with that. Bans are tied to the account's history, not to which phone number is currently attached, and evading one is against Steam's rules.
