VK starts with a phone number

New VK accounts are registered with a phone number, and the number remains central afterwards: VK ID uses it to sign you in, to confirm new devices and to restore access. The same ID signs in to VK's wider family of services, so the number protects more than the social page alone.

VK can deliver codes by SMS, by a call, or as a notification in the VK app on a device already signed in. A rented verification number handles the SMS route; if VK offers a call, choose the text message instead.

The recycled-number problem

Mobile operators do not keep unused numbers forever. A number that stops being used — a SIM left in a drawer, a contract that lapsed — is eventually given to a new customer. For an app that treats the number as the key to the account, that has an uncomfortable consequence: the new owner may be able to receive the codes that restore an old page linked to it.

VK has added checks around this, but the simplest protection is on your side: keep the number on your VK ID current, and move it to a new number before you give up the old one.

Why this matters more for a rented number

A rented verification number is, by design, a number that will serve someone else afterwards. That is fine for an app you use once. On VK, where the number is the key, a page left on a rented number after the rental ends is exactly the recycled-number situation above, arranged in advance.

So the rule for VK is firm: if you open a page with a rented number and want to keep it, replace the number with one you control while the rental is still active, and add a password and a second confirmation method.

One number, one page

A number is linked to one VK page at a time. Linking it to a new page can release it from an older one, which is another reason an old page can lose its only recovery route without its owner noticing. If you manage more than one page, each needs its own number and its own care.

The message that asks for your code

A common trick on VK comes from a friend's hacked page: "I accidentally sent my code to your number, can you forward it?" The code is for your own page, and forwarding it hands the page over. The same page then sends the message to your friends. Codes are never meant to be passed on.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. VK tried to confirm by call
   Choose the SMS option; a rented number cannot receive calls.
2. No SMS arrived
   Check the country code, wait, and request once more; a number from a nearer region often works better.
3. The number is already linked to another page
   Linking it here may release it from that page. Use a fresh number unless the other page is yours.
4. A friend asked you to forward a code
   Their page is probably hacked. Do not forward it; tell them by another channel.
5. You cannot get into an old page tied to a number you gave up
   Use VK's restore process, which may ask for identity confirmation.
