On Shopee, the number is the account

Plenty of apps ask for a phone number and then mostly forget it. Shopee does the opposite. The number is the identifier most accounts are created with, the default sign-in route, the place security codes go when something about the account changes, and the contact the seller and courier see on an order. It sits underneath almost everything the account does.

That makes the choice of number weightier here than on a marketplace that runs on email. A rented number is fine for opening an account and receiving the first code, as long as you accept from the start that the account must be taught to stand on something else too.

People most often use one of our numbers for Shopee to:

• Opening a buyer account without handing Shopee a personal number
• Shopping on the Shopee site of a country you are visiting or moving to
• Keeping a family member's account separate from your own line
• Trying the app before committing a long-term number to it

Each Shopee country is its own site and its own account

Shopee operates separate sites for its markets, each with its own domain, currency, sellers, promotions and account base. An account on Shopee Malaysia is not an account on Shopee Philippines. The number you sign up with is expected to be from the country whose site you are using, because it will carry delivery contact and security codes inside that country.

If you are about to shop in a country you are visiting or have just moved to, start on that country's Shopee with a number from that country. Your home account will not follow you, and a foreign number on a local site is one of the more common reasons a code does not arrive.

Verify an email before you need it

The single most useful step on a Shopee account opened with a rented number is to add and verify an email address and set a password immediately. Shopee's own rule for changing a phone number is that you confirm the change through the current number or through a verified email. While the rental is active you have both; after it ends, only the email is left.

Done in the first ten minutes, this turns a fragile account into an ordinary one. Left for later, it can turn into a support ticket in which you have to prove who you are with nothing but order history.

ShopeePay is a wallet, and wallets want a real person

ShopeePay sits on top of the Shopee account in many markets. It has its own PIN, it can hold a balance, and using it beyond the basics asks for identity verification against official documents. Those checks exist because a wallet can hold and move money, and they are tied to the person, not the phone line.

Activating ShopeePay on an account that depends on a rented number combines a stored balance with a sign-in route that will disappear. Keep the two apart: pay by card, bank transfer or cash on delivery on such an account, and set up ShopeePay only on an account whose number you will keep.

Coins, vouchers and new-user deals follow the person

Shopee is known for aggressive promotions: welcome deals for first orders, free-shipping vouchers, coins earned and spent across the app, and flash sales on double-digit dates. The rules for who qualifies look at the account, the device, the payment method and the phone number together, precisely so that one person cannot collect a first-time offer several times.

A different phone number does not make a returning shopper new, and using rented numbers to multiply those offers is something Shopee actively detects and that we do not support. Orders placed that way can be cancelled and the accounts restricted. The honest use of a rented number on Shopee is privacy, not arbitrage.

When the code comes by WhatsApp or a phone call

In some markets Shopee offers to send the verification code through WhatsApp or read it out in a voice call instead of sending an SMS. Those options can help on a personal phone, but a rented verification number receives SMS only: it cannot take calls, and it is not registered on WhatsApp. If the screen offers a choice, pick SMS.

If the only option shown is WhatsApp or a call, that is a sign the rented number is not a good fit for this particular sign-in, and a number that receives SMS normally on a phone you hold will serve better.

Chat, not calls, between buyers and sellers

Shopee routes most buyer–seller contact through its in-app chat, and keeps payment in escrow until the buyer confirms receipt. That design means a seller does not need your personal number to answer a question, and a rented number on the account does not cut you off from the seller. Courier contact is the exception: couriers may call or text the number on the order, particularly for cash-on-delivery parcels.

Installing Shopee and verifying the number

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The code was sent by WhatsApp or a call instead of SMS
   Choose SMS on the verification screen. A rented number receives text messages only; it cannot take calls or WhatsApp messages.
2. The number belongs to a different country than the Shopee site
   Use a number from the same country as the Shopee site. A mismatch is a frequent reason the code never arrives.
3. The number is already registered
   Each number belongs to one Shopee account per country. Choose another number rather than trying to reclaim this one.
4. Several codes were requested in a short time
   Stop requesting and wait. Shopee slows down repeated requests to the same number; each new request pushes the next code further away.
5. The code arrived but the field says it is wrong
   Only the latest code is valid. If you requested more than once, use the most recent message.
6. Your connection is in a different country from the number
   Where possible, use a connection in or near the number's country; a big mismatch can trigger extra checks.
7. A welcome deal is not showing on the new account
   New-user offers are checked against devices and payment methods too. The account can be new and the shopper still not qualify.
8. Signed out after the rental ended and no code arrives
   Sign in with the verified email and password, then change the phone number. If none were set, contact Shopee support for that country.

1. Is the number from the same country as the Shopee site? Yes Continue. No Choose a number from that country first.
2. Did the screen offer SMS as a channel? Yes Pick SMS and enter the code quickly. No A rented number is not a fit for this sign-in; use a phone you hold.
3. Have you verified an email and set a password? Yes The account can survive the rental ending. No Do it now, while you still have the number too.
4. Do you want to use ShopeePay? Yes Do that on an account with your own long-term number. No Pay by card, bank transfer or cash on delivery.
5. Are you trying to get a first-order deal again? Yes Stop; those are limited per person and we do not support it. No Carry on shopping.
6. Will you keep this account? Yes Change the phone number through the verified email before the rental ends. No Remove saved payment methods when you are done.

Before you request another code

• Match the number's country to the Shopee site
• Pick SMS when Shopee offers a choice of channel
• Enter the code straight away, and only the latest one
• Verify an email and set a password in the first minutes
• Keep ShopeePay off an account that rests on a rented number
• Keep courier contact reachable, or pay before delivery
• Do not use new numbers to repeat first-order deals
• Change the number through the verified email before the rental ends
