Registering Viber on a rented number

Viber verifies a new install by sending a short numeric code by SMS, or by placing a brief automated call whose caller ID itself is the code — no need to answer, just to see the number on the incoming call screen. Which method fires depends on the country and on Viber's own routing at that moment, and either one is enough to finish setup once it lands.

A number that has never touched Viber before, in a country Viber's delivery reaches cleanly, tends to register without drama. The harder case is a number with history: if it was already tied to a Viber account by an earlier renter, re-registering it on a new phone effectively steps into that old account rather than starting fresh, which is rarely what anyone wants. Buying from a range with a clean recent record, and checking the country table on this page before you commit, avoids most of that.

One quirk worth knowing going in: Viber sometimes wants the SIM actually present in the phone finishing setup, on top of the SMS or call step, particularly the first time an account is created on that device. A rented virtual number skips the physical SIM by design, so if setup stalls after the code is accepted, that mismatch is usually why — see the troubleshooting table below.

People most often use one of our numbers for Viber to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Why Viber Out changes the calculation

Viber Out is the feature that lets an account call ordinary mobile and landline numbers, not just other Viber users, and it runs on credit bought inside the app. That credit is not pocket change floating in the abstract: it is a balance attached to the account, and the account is attached to the phone number used to register it. Nothing about a rented number blocks buying credit, and that is exactly the part to think through before doing it.

If the account is ever lost, because the rental ends and the number is reassigned, any unused Viber Out credit goes with it. There is no separate wallet you can detach and carry to a new number; the balance lives inside the account tied to that specific registration. Someone who only wants Viber for receiving a single verification text has nothing to worry about here. Someone planning to fund calling credit on an account built on a rented number is taking on a real, avoidable risk, and we would rather say so plainly than let a support ticket be the first time it comes up.

Desktop, tablet, and the QR code that ties them to the number

Viber's desktop and tablet apps do not register independently the way a phone does. Instead, you open Viber on the computer or tablet, and it shows a QR code that the already-verified phone app scans to link the two. From that point the desktop copy mirrors the phone account: same chats, same contacts, same communities.

The dependency runs one direction that matters here: the phone number is the anchor, and the desktop session rides on it. If the underlying account is deactivated, or the number stops belonging to the account for any reason, the linked desktop and tablet copies stop working along with it. This is worth knowing before setting up a rented Viber number across three devices for convenience, because all three go dark together, not independently.

Communities, channels, and where Viber is the default app

Viber's communities and public channels can run into the tens of thousands of members, and whoever holds the admin seat controls membership, posting rights and settings for the whole group. That admin seat is tied to the account, which is tied to the number. Someone building or running a community on a number they only rented is one lapsed rental away from handing admin control to a stranger, with no guarantee it can be recovered.

It also matters where Viber sits in the market: in several countries, including parts of eastern Europe, Greece, and the Philippines among others, Viber is the messenger most people already have installed, and local banks, delivery services and other businesses have built notification flows around that fact. An account registered there is not just a chat client; it can be the channel a bank or courier actually uses to reach someone. That is a reason to be more careful about which number goes on the account, not less, if the account is meant to receive that kind of message long-term.

Deactivating an account on purpose, versus letting the number lapse

Viber has a built-in way to deactivate an account, reached from Settings, and it is worth using on purpose rather than simply walking away from a rented number and letting whatever happens, happen. Deactivating removes the account from Viber's systems in a controlled way: chats and data tied to that registration are cleared out, rather than sitting there waiting for the next person to log into them.

The alternative — doing nothing and letting the rental simply expire — puts the account in a messier spot. The number becomes available for reassignment on Viber's side just the same, but nothing was deliberately cleaned up first, and whoever gets the number next may find an account still logged in and still populated. Anyone finishing up with a rented Viber number they do not plan to keep should deactivate it properly rather than leave that to chance.

For an account worth keeping, the alternative to deactivating is moving off the rented number entirely before the rental ends, onto a number under your own long-term control, so there is nothing left riding on a number you are about to lose.

What other Viber users can actually see

Viber's privacy controls let you limit who sees your profile photo, your online status and your last-seen time, mostly scoped to contacts versus everyone. What they do not do is separate your identity from your number the way a username-based app can: the phone number is still how people find and add you on Viber, and there is no alternate handle that stands in for it.

That is a real difference from an app where a number can register the account and then disappear from view entirely. On Viber, hiding activity details is possible; hiding the fact that the account is built on that specific number is not, which is worth factoring in for anyone who wanted a rented number specifically to keep their real number off the app altogether.

Installing Viber and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install Viber from Google Play and open it
  2. Enter the rented number, including its country code, exactly as issued
  3. Wait for the SMS code, or watch for a brief incoming call whose number is itself the code
  4. Enter the code, or the digits shown on the flash call, on the verification screen
  5. Give Viber a name and, optionally, a profile photo to finish setup
  6. Open Settings, Privacy, and review who can see your photo and status
  7. Skip buying Viber Out credit unless you plan to keep this number long-term
  8. If you want desktop access, open Viber on the computer and scan its QR code with the phone app

On iPhone

  1. Install Viber from the App Store and open it

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The number was already tied to a Viber account from a previous renter
Re-registering steps into that older account instead of starting clean. If chats or a name you did not set appear after verification, take a different number rather than continuing on this one.
  2. No SMS and no flash call arrive after several minutes
Check the country table on this page for how Viber is delivering to that range today, and confirm the number was entered with its correct country code before requesting again.
  3. Setup accepts the code but then asks for the SIM to be present in the device
This happens more often on a first-time registration in some countries. There is no workaround from a rented virtual number in this case; try a different country or range known to register cleanly without it.
  4. Several codes were requested in quick succession
Stop and wait rather than retrying immediately; repeated requests on the same number tend to push back the next attempt rather than speed one through.
  5. The connection's country is far from the number's own country
Use a connection based in, or close to, the number's own country where practical. A large mismatch is a common trigger for slow or blocked delivery.
  6. The code was entered after the verification screen had already timed out
Request a fresh code instead of retyping an old one; keep the order open so the new one can be read as soon as it lands.
  7. Desktop or tablet Viber stopped working with no warning
Check whether the phone account was deactivated or lost its number; the desktop copy is linked through the phone and stops working the moment that link breaks.
  8. A community you admin became unreachable after the rental ended
This is the number, not a bug: admin rights follow the account tied to that number. If keeping the community matters, move the account to a number you control well before any rental ends.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Did an SMS code or flash call arrive? Yes Enter the code before the verification screen times out. No Check the country table on this page, and confirm the country code was entered correctly.
  2. Does the account show chats or a name you never set? Yes The number already carries a Viber account; take a different number instead. No Continue with setup normally.
  3. Do you plan to buy Viber Out credit on this account? Yes Only do this on a number you control long-term; rented-number credit is lost with the account. No No special precaution needed here.
  4. Do you admin a community or channel on this account? Yes Move the account to a number you control before any rental period ends. No Losing the number mainly costs the chat history, not admin control of anything.
  5. Are you finished with this number for good? Yes Deactivate the account deliberately in Settings rather than letting the rental simply lapse. No Keep the rental active until you are ready to move to a permanent number.

Questions

Does Viber accept virtual or rented numbers?

Usually, for the SMS or flash-call step itself, depending on the range and whether the number has prior Viber history. The table on this page tracks which countries are delivering codes today, since that changes over time.

Can I keep using the account after the number expires?

Only if you move off the rented number first. Viber ties the account, any Viber Out credit and any community admin rights to the number, so a reassigned number can carry all of that to whoever gets it next.

Will Viber ask for the number again later?

Mainly when linking a new device or reinstalling, not during ordinary day-to-day use. Desktop and tablet linking goes through a QR code scanned by the phone app rather than a fresh SMS code.

Can I use my own number afterwards instead of the rented one?

Viber does not offer a simple in-app number swap the way some messengers do; the realistic path is deactivating the rented-number account in Settings and registering fresh on a number you control.

Which country works best for Viber today?

It changes over time, which is why none is named here: the table on this page tracks real delivery by country and stays current. Check it before buying rather than relying on general reputation.

What if the code never arrives — am I charged?

You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded to your balance automatically, with nothing to claim.

Can somebody else receive my Viber code on that number?

Only if they already have access to the number itself when the SMS or flash call lands. A verification code should never be forwarded to anyone who asks for it, no matter how the request is framed.

Can I use one number for two Viber accounts?

No, Viber ties one account to one number at a time. Registering a second account requires a second number; re-registering the same number logs into whatever account is already tied to it.

What happens to my Viber Out credit if I lose the number?

It is lost along with the account. Credit is not a separate wallet you can carry to a new number, so it should only be bought on a number you actually intend to keep.

Why did my desktop Viber suddenly stop working?

Desktop and tablet copies are linked to the phone account through a QR code, not registered on their own. If the phone account is deactivated or the number changes hands, the linked desktop session stops working with it.

What happens to a community I admin if the number lapses?

Admin rights sit with the account, which sits with the number, so a lapsed rental can hand control of a community to whoever is issued that number next. Move a community's admin account to a permanent number well ahead of time.

How do I properly get rid of a Viber account I do not want anymore?

Use the deactivation option in Settings rather than simply letting the rental expire. Deactivating clears the account out in a controlled way instead of leaving it sitting there for whoever gets the number next.
