Badoo has more than one way in

Some dating apps are built on the phone number and nothing else. Badoo is looser: an account can start from a phone number, an email address, or a linked Google, Apple or Facebook account, and the options offered depend on the country and the device. Many people who ask about a number for Badoo can in fact sign up with an email and never be asked for one.

Where Badoo does ask for a number — at signup through the phone route, or later to confirm the account — it sends an SMS code. A rented number can receive that code and keeps the personal line you use for everything else out of a dating profile.

The verification ladder, rung by rung

Think of Badoo's checks as a ladder. The bottom rung is a confirmed phone number or linked account: it shows the profile is tied to something reachable. The rung members care about is photo verification: Badoo asks for a selfie in a specific pose and compares it with the profile photos, and a verified profile carries a visible mark.

Photo verification is about the person in the pictures, not the phone. It needs your own face, and a rented number neither speeds it up nor stands in for it. If you want matches to trust your profile, that is the check to complete.

Why keep your personal number off a dating app

A phone number is a key to much more than a dating profile: messaging apps, social accounts and sometimes a real name are all findable from it. Keeping it out of a dating account removes one link between a profile shown to strangers and the rest of your life.

The same reasoning applies to what happens after a match. Move to a phone call or a messaging app only when you have decided to, and not because a match insists early on.

Premium and credits follow the payment, not the number

Badoo's paid features — Premium and credits spent on extra visibility — are billed to the payment method in your app store or on the account. A subscription keeps renewing whether or not the phone number on the account still works.

If you stop using an account that was opened with a rented number, cancel any subscription in the App Store or Google Play first. Losing sign-in does not stop the billing; it only removes the easy way of cancelling from inside the app.

A new number is not a new person

Badoo removes accounts that break its rules, and it recognises returning banned users by far more than a phone number — devices, photos, payment details and behaviour all feed into it. Accounts opened to get around a ban are usually found and removed again.

We do not support using our numbers to return to Badoo after a ban. If you think a ban was a mistake, Badoo's own appeal process is the route.

Two red flags worth knowing

Dating-app scams tend to follow a script: a match quickly asks to continue on WhatsApp or another app, and later there is a crisis that needs money, or an "investment" that only this person knows about. A second script targets the account itself — the match asks you to read back a code, which is really a sign-in or account-recovery code.

Keeping early conversations inside Badoo, and never sharing a code or sending money to someone you have not met, avoids both.

The number's country does not decide who you see

Badoo is used in a very large number of countries, and the people it shows you depend on where your phone is, not where your number was issued. A number from one country can open an account used in another. What the number's country does affect is whether the code arrives smoothly: a number used on a connection far from its home country looks unusual to any app's safety checks.

Leaving Badoo: delete, then let the number go

Deleting the account from Badoo's settings removes the profile and its photos from the app. It does not cancel a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, and it does not refund credits already bought. Cancel billing first, delete the account second, and only then stop using the number that was attached to it — in that order you never need a code you can no longer receive.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No code arrived
   Check the country code and remove any leading zero, wait, then request once more. If it still fails, try another country from the table.
2. Badoo says the number is already in use
   Each number is linked to one account. Pick a fresh number.
3. Photo verification keeps failing
   It compares your selfie pose with your profile photos. Use good light, match the pose exactly, and make sure your profile photos show you.
4. The account was blocked soon after signup
   Badoo's safety checks look at far more than the number. If you believe it was a mistake, use Badoo's appeal route.
5. A match asked for a code you received
   Do not share it. It is an attempt to take over your account.
6. Premium is still being charged after you lost access
   Subscriptions are billed by the app store. Cancel in Google Play or the App Store subscription settings.
7. Your connection is far from the number's country
   A large mismatch can trigger extra checks. Use a connection near the number's country where possible.
