Reddit signup barely asks for anything, and that is deliberate
A brand-new Reddit account needs a username and a password. An email address is offered during signup but can be skipped, and a phone number is not part of the flow at all unless the person creating the account chooses to add one later. Compared with the other apps covered on this site, that puts Reddit at the far end of the spectrum: the account most comfortable existing with almost no attached identity.
This is not a quirk to work around; it is how Reddit was built to work, and pseudonymity is central to why people use it the way they do. A throwaway account for one thread, a long-running account under a handle nobody connects to a real name, an account with no personal information anywhere near it — all of these are ordinary on Reddit in a way they are not on apps built around a real identity or a phone-first login.
That is also why a rented number matters less here than almost anywhere else on this site. It is not that a number never has a use on Reddit; it is that the account's own design already removes most of the reasons an app would demand one.
People most often use one of our numbers for Reddit to:
- Setting up an optional phone number step during Reddit signup
- Adding a number as a backup alongside an email you already control
- Testing how Reddit's optional verification prompts behave before committing a personal line
- Setting up two-factor with a number as a starting point before switching to an authenticator app
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

The trade-off: an account with nothing on file cannot be recovered
Skipping the email address at signup is easy, and skipping a phone number is the default. Both together, though, come with a real cost that is easy to miss until it matters: an account with no verified email and no phone number attached has no recovery path if the password is lost. There is no reset link to send and no code to text, because Reddit has nothing to send either one to.
This is the spine of what this page has to say. A rented number, used once to satisfy an optional prompt, does not by itself fix this, and neither does skipping it. What fixes it is deciding, deliberately, whether the account in front of you is disposable or worth protecting, and then adding whatever that decision calls for — usually an email address you actually check, sometimes a phone number too, before the password is the only thing standing between you and the account.
For a throwaway account meant to last a week, none of this matters. For an account carrying years of karma, saved posts, or a moderator seat, it matters a great deal, and the fix costs nothing but a few minutes in settings.

Two-factor authentication, and why an authenticator beats SMS here
Reddit offers two-factor authentication as an account setting, and turning it on is worth doing for any account with karma, saved history, or moderator access attached to it — the kind of account someone else would actually want to take over. It sits in the account's security settings and can be set up with an authenticator app rather than a text message.
An authenticator app is the more durable choice specifically because it does not depend on holding a particular phone number later. A code generated by an app on your device keeps working as long as you have that device or its backup codes, regardless of whether the number you signed up with is still yours. SMS-based two-factor works too, but it ties the account's security to a number that a rented line is not built to hold onto for years.
None of this is required to use Reddit day to day. It is a deliberate step for an account you have decided is worth protecting, taken once the decision described in the previous section has actually been made.

Moderator accounts are not just personal accounts
A person who moderates a large, active subreddit is holding something other people rely on: rules enforcement, removal queues, and often the only functioning line of defense against spam in a community with real members. Losing access to that account does not just inconvenience the moderator; it can leave a community with a gap in coverage until someone else steps in, or until Reddit's own processes around inactive or compromised moderator accounts run their course.
Reddit has its own rules and processes covering moderator accounts specifically, separate from the ordinary account settings that apply to everyone, because the stakes of a moderator account going dark are genuinely different from an ordinary account doing the same. Anyone moderating a subreddit with real traffic should treat two-factor and a recoverable email as closer to mandatory than optional, precisely because the account is not only theirs to lose.
Karma and account-age rules are not a verification problem
Many subreddits set their own minimum karma or minimum account age before a new account can post or comment there. This is a rule the individual community's moderators configure, enforced by that subreddit's own settings, and it has nothing to do with Reddit-wide identity verification, a phone number, or an email address. It is easy to conflate the two, because both show up as a wall that stops a fresh account from posting, but they are solved in completely different ways.
A rented phone number does not raise an account's karma and does not make it older than it is. There is no verification step, phone-based or otherwise, that satisfies a subreddit's karma or age gate; the only way through it is the same way every other account gets through it — participating, earning karma, and letting the account age normally. Anyone expecting a number to unlock a karma-gated subreddit is solving the wrong problem.
What this page is not written to help with
Reddit's rules are explicit that evading a ban — coming back under a new account after a subreddit or Reddit itself removed you — is against the rules, and this article is not a route around that. A rented number does not erase whatever pattern got an earlier account banned, and setting up a fresh account to keep doing the same thing is exactly what ban-evasion enforcement exists to catch.
The same goes for running accounts in bulk to manipulate votes, flood a subreddit, or manufacture the appearance of agreement. This service supports one person setting up one account, or a small number of accounts they genuinely and separately use, the way the sections above describe. It does not support, and gives no guidance toward, ban evasion, vote manipulation, or operating accounts at scale.
Installing Reddit and verifying the number
On Android
- Install Reddit from Google Play and choose to sign up with a username and password
- Add an email address when prompted, even though Reddit allows skipping it, since it is the account's main recovery path
- If a phone number prompt appears, enter the rented number including its country code exactly as issued
- Wait for the SMS code and enter it before the verification screen expires
- Open Settings, then Account settings, and confirm the email address shown is one you actually check
- Open Settings, then Safety and privacy, or the security section, to turn on two-factor authentication
- Choose an authenticator app over SMS when the option is offered, and store the backup codes somewhere safe
- Decide, based on how long you plan to keep this account, whether a phone number is worth keeping attached at all
On iPhone
- Install Reddit from the App Store and choose to sign up with a username and password
- Decide, based on how long you plan to keep this account, whether a phone number is worth keeping attached at all
When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- The account has no email and no phone number, and the password is lost
There is nothing to recover this against. Reddit cannot send a reset link or a code to an account with neither on file. This is the single most avoidable failure covered on this page, and the only fix is prevention: add an email you control before this happens, not after. - A subreddit refuses to let the account post, citing karma or account age
This is a community-level rule, not a verification step of any kind. No phone number, rented or otherwise, changes an account's karma or how old it is. The only way through is participating elsewhere and letting the account age. - The rented number was refused, or no code arrives after several minutes
Check the country table on this page for how that range is delivering to Reddit today, then try a different number rather than repeating the same one. Since a phone number is optional for most Reddit accounts, skipping it entirely is also a reasonable option here. - Two-factor is asking for an SMS code but the number is no longer reachable
This is exactly the gap an authenticator app avoids. If backup codes were saved when two-factor was set up, use one of those to get back in and then switch the method away from SMS. - You requested a code several times in quick succession
Stop and wait rather than retrying right away; repeated requests tend to push the next attempt further out rather than force one through sooner. Give it a clear gap before trying again on the same number. - Your connection's country is far from the number's own country
Use a connection based in, or close to, the number's own country where possible. A large mismatch between the two is a common cause of a slow or missing code. - A moderator account is locked out and a community is relying on it
Treat this with urgency beyond an ordinary personal account. Use whatever recovery path the account still has, and consider bringing in a co-moderator while access is restored, since the subreddit's coverage is affected too. - Reddit is asking for verification on an account tied to a previous ban
Stop. This service supports setting up a genuine, first-time account, not returning under a new one after a ban. Ban evasion is against Reddit's rules and this page gives no path around it.
Working out which case you are in
- Does the account have an email address you can still get into? Yes Use Reddit's password reset through that email; the phone number is not needed for this. No Check whether a phone number was ever attached, since that is the only other recovery path.
- Is a subreddit blocking posts because of karma or account age? Yes This is that community's own rule; no phone number or verification step resolves it. No The block is likely something else; check the subreddit's posted rules directly.
- Is two-factor set to SMS on a number you might lose? Yes Switch to an authenticator app and save backup codes before the number becomes unreachable. No An authenticator app is already the durable choice; keep the backup codes safe regardless.
- Are you a moderator of a subreddit with real, active members? Yes Treat two-factor and a recoverable email as closer to mandatory, since losing access affects others. No Ordinary account precautions are enough for a personal, non-moderator account.
- Are you trying to return to Reddit after being banned? Yes This page and this service do not help with that; stop here. No Setting up or securing a genuine first-time account is what this page supports.
Before you request another code
- Decide up front whether this account is disposable or one worth protecting long-term
- Add an email address you actually check, even though Reddit allows skipping it
- Turn on two-factor authentication and prefer an authenticator app over SMS
- Save the backup codes from two-factor setup somewhere safe, separate from the phone
- Do not expect a phone number to raise karma or lower a subreddit's age requirement
- If moderating an active subreddit, treat recovery and two-factor as closer to mandatory
- Check the country table on this page if a phone step is used during signup
- Do not use a fresh account, rented number or otherwise, to return after a ban
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No email, no phone at all | Works for signup | Maximum pseudonymity, nothing tied to you | None; a lost password ends the account permanently | Fine only for a short-lived, disposable account |
| Email only, no phone | Works for signup | One contact point, under your control | A password reset reaches this account through that email | A solid baseline for most Reddit accounts |
| Email plus authenticator two-factor | Best combination | No number needed anywhere in the setup | Strong; backup codes cover a lost device | The setup this page actually recommends |
| Your own SIM as the phone number | Works where asked | Number tied to your real line if ever shown | Depends on keeping that line active | Reasonable if a number is wanted alongside an email |
| A rented private number like ours | Works for the optional step | Number not tied to your personal line | Not durable on its own; add an email regardless | Useful for the signup prompt itself, little else here |
| SMS as the only two-factor method | Works while the number lasts | Same privacy as any verified number | Weak; losing the number can lock out two-factor | An authenticator app avoids this exact failure |
| A public or shared SMS inbox | Not suitable | No privacy — a code sent there may be visible to others | No recovery; anyone with access could see a code meant for you | Not appropriate for an account meant to last |

Questions
Does Reddit require a phone number to sign up?
No. A username and password are enough, and even an email address can be skipped at signup. A phone number is not part of the standard signup flow at all; it only appears if you choose to add one, usually toward two-factor.
Is it safe to skip both email and phone on a Reddit account?
It is safe in the sense that Reddit allows it, but it comes with a real cost: an account with neither on file cannot be recovered if the password is forgotten. That trade-off is fine for a throwaway account and risky for one you plan to keep.
Does Reddit accept virtual or rented numbers?
Generally yes for the optional signup or two-factor step, though delivery can vary by range and country. Since a number is rarely required at all on Reddit, skipping it is also a reasonable option if a rented number struggles.
What is the best recovery setup for a Reddit account?
An email address you actually check, paired with two-factor authentication set to an authenticator app rather than SMS. That combination does not depend on holding any particular phone number over time.
Why is an authenticator app better than SMS for two-factor here?
An authenticator app generates codes on your device and does not depend on keeping a specific phone number reachable years later. SMS two-factor works, but it ties the account's security to a number that a rented line was never meant to hold long-term.
Does a phone number help get past a subreddit's karma requirement?
No. A subreddit's minimum karma or account-age rule is configured by that community's own moderators and has nothing to do with phone verification. The only way through is normal participation and time.
Why do moderator accounts need extra care?
A moderator of an active subreddit is holding something other people depend on for rules enforcement and spam control. Losing that account can leave a community without coverage, which is why Reddit has its own rules around moderator accounts specifically.
Can a rented number be used to come back after a ban?
No, and this page will not help with that. Ban evasion is explicitly against Reddit's rules, and creating a new account to keep doing whatever got an earlier one banned is exactly what that rule targets.
What if the code never arrives during signup — am I charged?
You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically, with nothing to claim. Since the number is optional here, this is a low-stakes step either way.
Can I remove a phone number from Reddit once it is added?
Yes, a phone number can be removed in account settings. Doing so may affect SMS-based two-factor if that is the method in use, so switch to an authenticator app first if you plan to remove the number.
Does Reddit ever require phone verification for a specific action?
Certain flagged actions or account states can prompt for a phone number as an extra check, separate from the ordinary signup flow. This is uncommon compared with apps that gate features behind verification by default.
Is renting a number to set up a Reddit account against its terms?
Reddit expects an account to be genuinely yours and used honestly, and we hold to the same standard: we support one person setting up their own account, or a small number they separately and genuinely use. We do not support ban evasion, vote manipulation, or operating accounts in bulk.
