Old addresses, old recovery details

AOL addresses from the dial-up era are still in daily use, for family, banks, doctors and pension statements. The recovery phone on many of them is a landline that no longer exists, or a mobile from three phones ago. Everything works until a password is forgotten or AOL asks to verify a new device, and then the codes go nowhere.

Choosing a recovery number

Use a mobile you will keep for years. A number that will be reassigned to someone else, including a rented one, should not be the recovery route to an address that receives your bank mail. Add a recovery email too, ideally at a different provider.

Fake renewal and invoice emails

Another common trick is an email that looks like an AOL, antivirus or "tech protection" renewal for a large amount, with a phone number to call to cancel. The call leads to the same remote-access scam. If you did not buy it, do not call the number in the email. Check any real subscription in your account settings.

Inactive accounts

Like Yahoo, AOL can close accounts that are not used for an extended period. If an old AOL address still receives important mail, sign in regularly, or move those services to an address you use every day.

Helping a relative with an old AOL address

Many AOL users are parents or grandparents who have had the address since the 1990s. 5. No SMS arrived at sign-up
   Check the country code, wait and request again.
