The phone is Wise's second step, not the login

Wise accounts open with an email address and a password. What the phone number adds is the second step: when you sign in on a new device, send money or change important details, Wise asks for a code sent by text or for approval in its app on a phone you have already trusted.

On a service that holds real balances, often in several currencies at once, that second step is the difference between "someone learned my password" and "someone emptied my account". The number is part of the lock, not a contact detail.

Better than SMS: confirm in the Wise app

Text messages can be delayed, intercepted through SIM-swap fraud, or simply lost with the number. Wise lets you approve sign-ins and payments in its own app on a device you have linked, which does not depend on the phone network at all.

If you set Wise up with a temporary number while waiting for your own, switching the second step to in-app confirmation early removes most of the risk that comes with that number ending.

Identity checks come before money

Wise is regulated as a money service, and before you can send, receive or hold money it verifies who you are, usually with an identity document and sometimes a photo or proof of address. The requirements depend on where you live and what you are doing.

That verification is about you, not the phone, and it cannot be completed with anything rented. What a rented number can do is receive the first code while you set up an account you will then move onto your own number.

Changing the number is deliberately hard

Because the phone guards the money, Wise does not let a number change happen quietly. Changing it involves confirming it is really you — through the old number, the app, or an identity check if neither is available — and some actions may be limited for a while afterwards.

The easy order is: add the new number while you still have the old one or the app confirmation. The hard order is losing the old number first and then asking Wise to trust you.

Moving country: the common reason people ask

Many people look for a number for Wise because they are moving abroad: the old SIM will lapse, the new one is not set up yet, and the Wise account has to keep working in between. The safe plan is to set up in-app confirmation before leaving, then add the new local number once you have it, while the old one or the app can still confirm the change.

The "move your money to a safe account" call

A recurring scam against money apps: a caller claims to be from Wise, your bank or the police, says your account is under attack, and asks you to read out a code or to send your balance to a "safe account". Every part of that is false. Wise does not ask for codes over the phone and never asks you to move money to protect it.

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No SMS code arrived
   Check the country code, wait, and request once more. If the app offers in-app confirmation, use that instead.
2. Wise wants identity documents
   That is required before sending or holding money and must be done with your own documents.
3. Changing the number asks for extra checks
   Expected: the number guards your money. Use the old number or the app confirmation if you still have them.
4. The rental ended and a code is needed
   Approve in the Wise app if it is set up. If not, contact Wise support to verify your identity.
5. A caller asked you to move money or read a code
   Hang up. Wise never asks either.

1. Will this Wise account hold or send money? Yes It needs your identity and, long term, your own number or in-app confirmation. No A rented number can receive a signup code.
2. Is in-app confirmation set up? Yes The account no longer depends on SMS. No Set it up as soon as possible.
3. Are you about to lose your current number? Yes Add the new one first, while the old one can confirm the change. No No action needed.
4. Has someone asked for a code or a transfer? Yes Hang up and report it. No Carry on.

• Add your own long-term number before any rental ends
