How contributor work works

You register as a contributor, complete your profile, and apply to projects that match your country, language and skills. Many projects have qualification tests. Once accepted, you work flexible hours on tasks and are paid for approved work.

Clients want data from real people in specific markets, a US English speaker rating US results for example. That is why location and identity are at the centre of Appen's checks.

Location is part of the job

A project for Brazilian Portuguese speakers in Brazil needs contributors who are in Brazil. Appen checks location in several ways, including your address, IP address and identity documents where required. A phone number from that country does not change where you are.

Misrepresenting location, whether through VPNs, borrowed details or foreign numbers, breaks the contributor terms and can lead to removal and forfeited pay.

One account per person

Appen allows one contributor account per person. Accounts that share devices, payment details or identity documents get flagged. Opening extra accounts to get more tasks or more projects puts all of them at risk. We do not support using our numbers for it.

Getting paid

Payment goes to a payment method in your name, depending on your country and project. The name on the payment account must match your contributor profile. Mismatches are among the most common reasons for delayed or blocked payments.

Fake Appen recruiters

Scammers use the names of AI data companies to post fake jobs on social media and messaging apps. They promise high pay for simple tasks, then ask for a "registration fee", "training fee" or deposit, or ask you to buy equipment. Some send you to fake task sites that show earnings you can never withdraw.

Work is not guaranteed

Project availability varies with client demand, and qualifying does not guarantee hours. Treat contributor work as flexible side income rather than a stable job, and be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed daily earnings in Appen's name.

Keep your profile current

If you move country, change payment method or change phone number, update your contributor profile before starting new work. Projects that depend on location can remove contributors whose details no longer match. Keeping everything current and honest avoids payment holds and awkward reviews later.

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. No projects are available to you
   Projects depend on country, language and demand, so check back later.
2. Your payment is on hold
   Check that your payment account name matches your profile.
3. Your account was deactivated
   Duplicate accounts and location mismatches are common reasons. Contact Appen support.
4. A recruiter asks for a fee
   It is a scam. Appen work never requires payment.
5. A verification code did not arrive
   Check the number and country code, then request again.
