On Depop, your shop is a public profile

Depop feels closer to a social network than a classified-ads site. Every seller has a profile with a username, a picture, a bio, a feed of listings and a public record of reviews. Buyers follow shops, like items and message sellers directly. That openness is what makes the app work, and it is also why sellers think carefully about which personal details sit behind the profile.

The phone number is not one of the details buyers see. It is used by Depop to verify that an account belongs to a real, reachable person, and to protect the account if something about it changes. Keeping a personal number off a public-facing account is a reasonable preference, and a rented number is one way to do that for the verification step.

People most often use one of our numbers for Depop to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

When Depop asks for a number

Depop accounts are commonly created with an email address or a linked Apple or Google account. A phone number check tends to appear at particular moments: when an account starts selling, when the app sees activity it wants to confirm, or when an account is being recovered. The exact trigger varies by market and changes over time as the safety rules are tuned.

Because the check can come back later, a number that verified the account once should either stay reachable or be replaced in settings with one you will keep. An account that only ever buys is less likely to be asked again than an active shop.

The address on the parcel is the real privacy question

Many Depop sellers post items themselves. A self-posted parcel usually carries a return address, and a buyer who receives it now knows where the seller lives. For a teenager or a student selling clothes from a bedroom, that is a far more sensitive detail than a phone number the buyer never sees.

In markets where Depop provides its own prepaid shipping labels, using them keeps the flow inside the app and avoids hand-writing a return address. Where you post yourself, a return address that is not your home — a work address, a parcel locker service or a post office box — does more for your privacy than any choice of phone number.

Getting paid needs details that are yours

Money from sales reaches the seller through a payout method in their own name, and in many markets the payments provider checks the seller's identity before paying out, particularly as sales grow. Tax rules in several countries now require platforms to report sellers above certain thresholds, which ties the shop to a real identity whether or not a phone number is.

A rented number therefore fits a buyer account or a first few casual sales at most. A shop that sells regularly needs contact details and payout details that will still be valid a year from now.

Deals moved off the app lose their protection

Some buyers ask to pay by bank transfer, to settle through a friends-and-family payment, or to meet in person to save on postage. Each of those takes the sale outside the payment flow Depop can see, and with it outside the process that handles items that never arrive or do not match the listing.

Keeping payment and messages in the app is the simplest protection there is. It also means you never need to give anyone your phone number, rented or personal.

Nobody from Depop needs your code

A familiar pattern on resale apps: a "buyer" asks the seller to confirm something by reading out a code they have just received, or a message claiming to be from Depop support asks for a verification code to "unlock payment". The code is a login or account-change code, and handing it over hands over the account.

Depop does not ask for codes through chat, email or a phone call. Ignore the request, do not click any link that came with it, and report the account inside the app.

Installing Depop and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install Depop from Google Play and create an account with email or a linked sign-in
  2. When a phone number is requested, enter the rented number with its country code
  3. Type the SMS code as soon as it arrives
  4. Set a username that does not reveal your full name if privacy matters to you
  5. Use Depop shipping labels where offered, or a return address that is not your home
  6. Keep all messages and payments in the app
  7. Add payout details only on an account whose number you will keep
  8. Replace the number in settings before the rental ends if the account stays active

On iPhone

  1. Install Depop from the App Store and create an account with email or a linked sign-in

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The code did not arrive
Check that the number was entered with its country code and no leading zero, then wait before requesting again. If it still fails, try another country from the table.
  2. The number is already linked to another account
A number verifies one account. Use a different number rather than trying to move this one.
  3. Depop asked for the number again weeks later
Rechecks happen on new devices, account changes or flagged activity. If the rental has ended, update the number in settings before the next check.
  4. A payout is waiting for identity verification
That is the payments provider checking the seller. It needs your own details and cannot be completed with a rented number.
  5. A buyer asked to pay outside the app
Decline. Off-app payments are not covered by Depop's process for missing or misdescribed items.
  6. Someone asked you to read back a code
It is a takeover attempt. Do not share the code; report the account.
  7. Your connection is in a different country from the number
A large gap can trigger extra checks. Use a connection near the number's country where you can.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Will this account sell regularly? Yes Use your own long-term number; payouts will need your details anyway. No A rented number can cover buying or a few casual sales.
  2. Do you post parcels yourself? Yes Use Depop labels where available, or a return address that is not your home. No Platform shipping already keeps addresses out of the way.
  3. Has a buyer asked to pay or talk outside Depop? Yes Decline; that removes the app's protection. No Keep going in the app.
  4. Has anyone asked for a code you received? Yes Do not share it — report the account. No Nothing to do.
  5. Will you keep the account beyond the rental? Yes Update the number in settings before the rental ends. No Leave it once your purchase or sale is complete.

Questions

Does Depop require a phone number?

Not always at signup, which can use email or a linked account. Depop asks for a number to verify accounts at certain moments, often around selling or when activity needs confirming.

Can buyers see my phone number on Depop?

No. The number is used by Depop for verification and account security; buyers contact you through in-app messages.

Does Depop accept rented numbers?

Sometimes, depending on the range. The table on this page shows which countries are currently getting Depop codes through our numbers.

Can I receive Depop payouts with a rented number?

The number is not the issue — payouts need a payment account and often identity details in your own name. A shop that sells regularly should use your own contact details.

What reveals more about me: my number or my address?

Usually the address. A self-posted parcel with your home as the return address tells a buyer where you live; Depop labels or a non-home return address avoid that.

Is it safe to meet a Depop buyer in person?

An in-person sale arranged privately happens outside Depop's payment process, so there is no platform help if it goes wrong. Shipping through the app keeps the protection in place.

Why did Depop ask me to verify my number again?

Rechecks follow new devices, account changes or activity the safety systems want to confirm. Keep the number on file current.

A buyer asked for the code I just received — what is happening?

That is an attempt to take over your account. Do not share the code and report the buyer in the app.

Can I change the number on my Depop account?

Yes, through account settings with a code sent to the new number. Do it before a rented number expires if you keep the account.

Am I charged if the code does not arrive?

No. If no SMS arrives before the time runs out, the held amount returns to your balance automatically.

I am under 18 — can I use Depop?

Depop sets its own minimum age and it varies by market; check its terms for your country. Whatever your age, keep your home address and personal number off anything a stranger receives.

Do you have free Depop numbers?

Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Depop usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.
