Why the number matters more here than on most apps

WhatsApp verification in three steps: the number goes into the app, the app sends a code, the code appears here.

WhatsApp does not treat the phone number as one login method among several. It is the account. There is no username, no email sign-in and no way to keep the account and swap the number out later except through WhatsApp's own Change Number tool. Whoever holds the number that verified an account is, as far as WhatsApp is concerned, entitled to use it, which is a stricter arrangement than apps that let a password or a separate identity stand in once the account exists.

That single fact is what a rented number changes about using WhatsApp. Verification itself is ordinary: a 6-digit code arrives by SMS, or by voice call if the text does not land. The part worth planning for is afterward, once the rental period is a fixed window and the account is not, because nothing about WhatsApp enforces that those two timelines match up.

The country table on this page tracks which ranges are getting WhatsApp's SMS through right now, since that varies by country and shifts over time rather than being a fixed yes or no for any one place.

People most often use one of our numbers for WhatsApp to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Losing the number does not automatically mean losing the chats

These are two different things, and conflating them is the most common mistake people make with a rented WhatsApp number. The account is the registration tied to the phone number. The chat history is separate: it lives on the device itself, and, if backups are turned on, in a copy stored in the user's own Google Drive or iCloud, not on WhatsApp's servers and not tied to the phone number the way the account is.

So if a rented number is lost and someone else re-registers it, the account attached to that number goes with it, but the messages already on your phone stay on your phone, and a backup already made stays wherever it was made. What you lose is the ability to keep receiving and sending as that account, and any WhatsApp identity people already messaged. What you do not necessarily lose is the record of what was said.

Restoring a backup only ever happens at the moment a number is freshly verified on a device, before any messages arrive, and it can only be done once per install. This is why the sequence matters: back up first, then use Change Number to move onto a number you keep, rather than losing the number and trying to recover afterward.

Chat history lives on the phone and in a backup you own, which is why losing a number and losing the messages are two different events. Photo: Pexels

The 6-digit PIN that stops a takeover

Two-step verification on WhatsApp is a 6-digit PIN, separate from the SMS code, set by the account owner in Settings. Once it is on, WhatsApp asks for that PIN again from time to time, and also whenever the number is re-registered on a new device, even the same phone reinstalling the app. Without it, anyone who controls the number can generally re-verify the account outright; with it, they also need a PIN that only the person who set it knows.

This is the account owner's decision, not something we set or can retrieve. If it is turned on and later forgotten, WhatsApp enforces a waiting period before letting a new PIN be set, rather than resetting it on request, so it is worth writing down somewhere durable rather than only remembering it. For a number you expect to keep, setting the PIN early is a small step that closes off the exact scenario this section is warning about.

WhatsApp Business is a separate account on its own number

WhatsApp Business is a distinct app with its own installation, and it needs its own phone number to verify, separate from a personal WhatsApp account. The two do not share a number: registering the same number in both apps is not how it works, and trying to verify Business with a number already active on ordinary WhatsApp will simply run into the same one-number-one-account rule described above.

People renting a number for Business usually want exactly that separation — a business presence that does not sit on the same account as a personal one. That works the same way as regular WhatsApp verification: a fresh number, a 6-digit code, and the same considerations about keeping or moving the account afterward.

Linked devices are not a second account

WhatsApp lets one account be open on a phone and up to several companion devices at once — a browser, a desktop app, a tablet — through Linked Devices in Settings. All of them show the same account, the same chats and the same number; none of them is a separate registration, and none of them needs its own SMS code. Logging out a linked device does not touch the account itself.

This sometimes gets confused with holding two accounts, but it is the opposite: multi-device is WhatsApp letting one number-bound account reach several screens, not a way to split one number into more than one identity. Anyone wanting an actual second account still needs a second number, verified separately.

What the code and the PIN are actually protecting

A WhatsApp verification code proves control of the number for a few minutes; the two-step PIN proves it indefinitely. Neither should ever be read out or forwarded to someone else, including anyone claiming to be WhatsApp support, a seller, or a helper resolving an "issue" with the order — that request pattern is itself the warning sign, not a legitimate step in getting verified.

Linked Devices, under Settings, is where every companion session is listed, with the option to log any of them out. Checking it after verifying on a rented number is worth doing once, since it is direct confirmation that the account currently has only the sessions you actually opened.

Installing WhatsApp and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Install WhatsApp from Google Play and open it
  2. Enter the rented number, including its country code, exactly as issued
  3. Wait for the 6-digit SMS code, or request the voice call if it does not arrive within a couple of minutes
  4. Enter the 6-digit code on the verification screen
  5. Allow WhatsApp to check for an existing backup if one is offered, or skip it on a brand-new account
  6. Enter a display name and, optionally, a profile photo to finish setup
  7. Open Settings, Account, Two-step verification, and set a 6-digit PIN if you plan to keep this account
  8. Open Settings, Chats, Chat backup, and turn on Google Drive backup if you want the history preserved

On iPhone

  1. Install WhatsApp from the App Store and open it
  2. Enter the rented number, including its country code, exactly as issued
  3. Wait for the 6-digit SMS code, or request the voice call if it does not arrive within a couple of minutes
  4. Enter the 6-digit code on the verification screen
  5. Allow WhatsApp to check for an existing iCloud backup if one is offered, or skip it on a brand-new account
  6. Enter a display name and, optionally, a profile photo to finish setup
  7. Open Settings, Account, Two-step verification, and set a 6-digit PIN if you plan to keep this account
  8. Open Settings, Chats, Chat backup, and turn on iCloud backup if you want the history preserved

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. The number already has an active WhatsApp registration from a previous renter
Cancel and take a different number rather than retrying. A number with recent WhatsApp history is the commonest reason a code is delayed or pushed straight to the voice-call option, and waiting does not change that.
  2. Your connection's country is different from the number you rented
Use a connection based in, or close to, the number's own country where possible. A mismatch between the requesting connection and the number's country is a frequent trigger for a delayed or refused SMS.
  3. You requested a code several times in quick succession
Stop and wait, at least 30 minutes and longer if you have already made several attempts, before trying again. Repeated requests tend to push the next available attempt further out rather than forcing one through.
  4. The number's range is one WhatsApp treats as non-mobile
Check the country table on this page before buying: some ranges are filtered by WhatsApp's own network checks regardless of how long you wait. A range with a measured delivery record avoids this.
  5. You kept requesting SMS instead of using the call option
After one failed SMS attempt, use WhatsApp's call-me option on the same screen. Voice delivery sometimes succeeds on ranges where text messages are filtered.
  6. The code was entered after the verification screen had already timed out
Request a fresh code instead of retyping an old one; an expired code is rejected even if it was otherwise correct. Keep the order open so the next code can be read as soon as it lands.
  7. The number was entered with the wrong country code or a leading zero left in
Re-check the number exactly as issued before requesting again; a mistyped digit sends the code to an unrelated number, and it will never arrive.
  8. A two-step PIN is being asked for and was never set by you
This means the number already has an account with a PIN set by a previous owner, and there is no legitimate way past it. Take a different number instead; do not attempt to guess or reset a PIN that is not yours.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Did any SMS or call arrive at all? Yes Enter the code as soon as it arrives; codes expire quickly. No Check whether the number may already have a WhatsApp registration before assuming a delivery fault.
  2. Is WhatsApp asking for a two-step PIN you never set? Yes Stop; the number has someone else's account on it. Take a different number. No Continue with the SMS or voice-call flow as normal.
  3. Do you want to keep the chat history from this account? Yes Turn on chat backup in Settings before you risk losing the number. No No backup needed; the account can simply be left once you are done.
  4. Do you want to keep this account after the rental ends? Yes Use Change Number in Settings to move to a number you control before the rental expires. No No action needed once you are finished using it.
  5. Do you need a WhatsApp Business account as well? Yes Verify it separately with its own number; it cannot share a number with personal WhatsApp. No A single account on this number is enough.

Questions

Does WhatsApp accept virtual or rented numbers?

Often, depending on the number's range and recent history rather than any blanket rule against rented numbers. The table on this page shows which countries are delivering codes today, and a range that struggles today can work again later.

What happens to my chats if I lose the rented number?

The account tied to that number goes to whoever registers it next, but chat history is stored on your device and, if backup is turned on, in your own Google Drive or iCloud copy — neither of which is deleted by losing the number. Move to a number you keep, using Change Number, before that happens.

What is the two-step PIN and do I need it?

It is an optional 6-digit code, separate from the SMS verification code, that WhatsApp asks for periodically once set. It is the main thing that stops someone else re-registering your number from taking the account; setting it is worth doing on any account you plan to keep.

Can I keep using the account after the number expires?

Only if you move it first. WhatsApp ties the account permanently to the number, so once a rented number is reassigned, whoever verifies with it next controls the account. Use Change Number in Settings before the rental ends.

Is WhatsApp Business the same account as regular WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp Business is a separate app that needs its own phone number and its own verification; it cannot share a number with a personal WhatsApp account already active on that number.

What are linked devices, and is that a second account?

Linked Devices let one WhatsApp account be open on a browser, desktop app or tablet alongside the phone, all showing the same chats. It is one account on several screens, not a second registration, and does not need its own SMS code.

Will WhatsApp ask for the number again later?

Mainly when the app is reinstalled, the account is verified on a new device, or WhatsApp flags the account for review. Ordinary day-to-day use of an already-verified account does not trigger another code.

Can I switch to my own number afterwards?

Yes, through Change Number in Settings, which moves the account, contacts and groups onto a new number. It does not by itself move chat history that has not been backed up.

Which country works best for WhatsApp today?

It changes over time, which is why none is named here: the table on this page tracks real delivery by country and stays current. Check it before buying rather than relying on general reputation.

What if the code never arrives — am I charged?

You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically, with nothing to claim. Try the voice-call option before giving up on that number.

Can I register two WhatsApp accounts on one number?

No. WhatsApp ties exactly one account to one number at a time. A second account needs a second number; re-verifying the same number logs into whichever account already holds it.

WhatsApp is asking for a PIN I never set. What now?

That means the number already has an account with two-step verification turned on by a previous owner, and there is no way past it that we can help with. Take a different number rather than attempting to guess or reset the PIN.
