What a phone number can reveal

A mobile number is rarely anonymous. It is often registered to your name with the carrier, it is the key to your messaging apps and their profile photos, it sits in the contact lists of family and colleagues, and it shows up in data sold between companies. Linking that number to a Grindr account ties the profile to all of it.

For many people that link would be harmless. For someone who is not out at home or at work, who lives in a country where same-sex relationships are criminalised, or who simply wants their dating life separate, it is exactly the link worth not creating.

People most often use one of our numbers for Grindr to:

Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Email, a rented number, or your own — choosing the login

Grindr offers several ways in, and the private choices are an email address that is not tied to your name, or a separate phone number. Both keep your personal number out. The difference is recovery: an email you control can receive a reset years from now, while a rented number only works as long as the rental.

If you use a rented number to open the account, add or keep a private email you control on it too, so the account can be recovered after the rental ends without ever involving your personal line.

The settings that protect you more than the number

Grindr sorts profiles by distance, which is the point of the app and also its main exposure. Switching off "show distance" stops your profile displaying how far away you are. A PIN lock keeps someone who picks up your phone out of the app, and paid tiers offer a discreet icon that does not say "Grindr" on the home screen.

Photos can identify you as surely as a phone number: a face, a tattoo, a recognisable room or a view from a window. Choosing what to show is part of the same decision as choosing what number to use.

Why data sharing is part of the conversation

Grindr has faced regulatory action over how it handled user data. Norway's data protection authority fined the company in 2021 for sharing personal data with advertising partners without valid consent, a case that drew attention precisely because simply being on the app says something sensitive about a person.

Whatever the app's current practices, the lesson for users is the same: the less identifying information the account holds, the less there is to leak, share or be compelled to hand over. A phone number is one of the most identifying details you can give any app.

Travelling or living somewhere hostile

In some countries the app itself is blocked, and in others police or criminals have used dating apps to find and entrap people. Grindr has at times changed how it behaves in those places, for example by hiding distance by default. If you are travelling to or living in such a place, a number and an email that cannot be traced to you, distance switched off, and a locked app are the minimum.

Local LGBTQ+ organisations and international groups publish up-to-date safety guidance for specific countries; it is worth reading before relying on any app there.

Scripts to recognise before they work

Two scams recur on Grindr. The first pushes the conversation off the app quickly — to WhatsApp, to a personal number — and then turns to threats: pay, or images and screenshots go to your family or employer. The second is a code request: "confirm you're real by sending me the code", where the code is really a sign-in code for your account or a registration code for a service on your number.

Keeping conversations inside Grindr until you are sure who someone is, never sharing codes, and being careful with images all make these scripts fail. If you are threatened, stop replying, keep the evidence and report the profile; paying rarely ends the demands.

Leaving Grindr, and what is left behind

Deleting a Grindr account in the app removes the profile, but screenshots other people took, conversations they saved, and anything shared outside the app are beyond its reach. That is one more reason to be careful with photos and details from the start rather than relying on deletion later.

If you used a rented number, delete the account while the number or the recovery email still works, so the deletion can be confirmed if Grindr asks. Cancel any paid tier in the App Store or Google Play first; deleting the account does not stop store billing.

Installing Grindr and verifying the number

On Android

  1. Decide on the login: a private email, a rented number, or both
  2. Install Grindr from Google Play and create the account
  3. If using a phone number, enter the rented number with its country code and type the SMS code
  4. Add or keep a private email you control for recovery
  5. Turn off "show distance" and set a PIN lock in settings
  6. Choose photos that do not identify you if that matters to you
  7. Keep early conversations inside Grindr and never share codes

On iPhone

  1. Decide on the login: a private email, a rented number, or both
  2. Install Grindr from the App Store and create the account

When the code does not arrive

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

  1. No code arrived
Check the country code and remove any leading zero, wait, and request once more. If it still fails, try another country, or sign up with a private email instead.
  2. The number is already in use
It is linked to another account. Use a fresh number or the email route.
  3. Grindr is blocked where you are
Some countries block the app. Be careful with workarounds there: using the app may itself carry legal risk. Check current local safety guidance.
  4. Someone asked for a code you received
Do not share it. It would let them into your account or register a service on your number.
  5. A contact is threatening to share images unless you pay
Stop replying, keep screenshots, report the profile in the app, and consider reporting to police or a support organisation where it is safe to do so.
  6. Locked out after the rental ended
Recover through the private email on the account. If none was added, contact Grindr support.

Working out which case you are in

  1. Would a link between Grindr and your real number cause you problems? Yes Use a private email or a rented number, not your own line. No Your own number is fine; the settings below still matter.
  2. Do you have a private email you can keep for years? Yes Use it for the login or recovery. No Create one before relying on a rented number.
  3. Are you in, or travelling to, a country hostile to queer people? Yes Hide distance, lock the app, and read local safety guidance first. No Still consider hiding distance.
  4. Has someone asked to move off the app quickly? Yes Slow down and keep talking inside Grindr. No Carry on.
  5. Has anyone asked for a code or for money? Yes Stop, block and report. No Nothing to do.

Questions

Do I need a phone number for Grindr?

No. Grindr also lets you sign up with an email address or a linked account. A phone number is one option among several.

Does Grindr accept rented numbers?

Sometimes, depending on the range. The table on this page shows which countries are currently getting Grindr codes through our numbers.

Why would I keep my number off Grindr?

Because a phone number can link the profile to your name, contacts and other accounts. For anyone not out, or in a hostile place, that link is a real risk.

Is an email safer than a rented number?

Both avoid your personal line. A private email you control lasts longer for recovery; a rented number lasts only as long as the rental.

Can other users see my number?

No. But anyone you give it to later can, which is why moving to a personal number early is worth avoiding.

How do I stop people seeing how far away I am?

Switch off "show distance" in Grindr's privacy settings.

Someone is threatening to share my photos — what do I do?

Stop replying, keep evidence, report the profile, and seek help from police or a support organisation where it is safe. Paying rarely ends the demands.

A match asked for a code — is that normal?

No. It is an attempt to take over your account or register a service on your number. Never share it.

Can I change the number later?

Yes, in account settings. If you used a rented number, add a private email so recovery does not depend on it.

What if the code never arrives?

You are not charged. The held amount returns to your balance when no SMS arrives in time.

Do you have free Grindr numbers?

Public free numbers are shared by everyone who visits a site, so Grindr usually rejects them or someone else reads the code first. Our numbers are private for the whole activation.

What if Grindr does not send the code?

You are not charged. Try another country from the table — delivery differs by country, and the measured rates show where it works best.
