Selling limits and what a new account signals
A brand-new eBay seller does not get to list without a ceiling. eBay caps how many items and how much total value a new or growing seller can list in a given period, and that cap eases as the account builds a track record of completed sales without problems. The exact numbers are set per account and change over time, so we are not going to quote a figure here — the point that matters is the shape of the system, not a specific limit.
The phone number on file is one of several signals eBay weighs when deciding how much trust a new account has earned, alongside things like how long the account has existed and how its early sales go. An account opened on a number with no history behind it reads differently from one carried over from years of ordinary use, and that difference can show up in how quickly selling limits move. This is not a loophole to plan around; it is simply how the caps work, and treating a rented number as a way to skip past them is not something we support.
People most often use one of our numbers for eBay to:
- Signing up to browse and buy without adding a personal number
- Opening a first seller account while keeping a personal number private
- Verifying an account while travelling, ahead of a local number
- Testing eBay before deciding whether to sell regularly
Many apps expect the number you keep. We help with the cases above; we do not help anyone reach an account that is not theirs — see our acceptable use policy.

Managed payments turns the number into a contact detail, not an identity
eBay pays sellers through its own managed payments system rather than a third-party processor, and that system runs identity checks before it will send money to a bank account. The bank account has to belong to the person selling, and the identity check behind it looks at documents and details that a phone number plays no part in establishing. This is worth being precise about: the phone number can confirm a login or a step during setup, but it is not, and cannot be, the thing that proves a payout belongs to you.
That separation is actually good news for anyone using a rented number honestly. It means losing a rented number after selling begins does not sever the payout itself, because the payout identity lives in the bank details and verification eBay already holds, not in whichever phone last received a code. What it does put at risk is ordinary account access — signing in, responding to a buyer, managing a listing — which is exactly why the number still deserves attention even though it is not the payout's foundation.

Disputes get argued, and an unreachable side tends to lose
A return, an item-not-as-described claim, or a case opened by a buyer runs on a clock, with messages going back and forth through eBay's resolution system and a deadline for responding. Some of these escalate to a phone conversation with eBay itself, particularly when the messaged back-and-forth has not settled things. A seller or buyer who cannot be reached during that window tends to lose the case by default, not because the underlying facts favoured the other side, but simply because silence reads as abandoning the claim.
This makes the phone number part of protecting an active sale, not just part of getting logged in. A rented number that expires while a case is open is a genuine problem: a message asking for a callback, or a code needed to re-enter the account and respond, can arrive at a number that no longer belongs to you. Anyone with an open case, a return in progress, or a shipment that could turn into a dispute should treat the number on file as something that needs to stay live until that specific item is fully settled, not just until the account passed signup.

Feedback is the one thing a new account cannot buy back
Every other part of an eBay account can, in principle, be rebuilt: a new listing looks like any other listing, a new bank connection can be re-verified, even a suspended account can sometimes be appealed. Feedback cannot. A score built from years of completed sales, each one a buyer's word that the transaction went well, is tied permanently to that one account and has no path to a replacement account, however clean the new one's history eventually becomes.
That is precisely why losing access matters more on eBay than on a marketplace opened last year. An account with a decade of feedback behind it is worth protecting the way you would protect anything that cannot be reissued, and the phone number sits inside that protection as the thing that gets a locked-out seller back in, or confirms a login eBay flagged as unusual. Treating that number as disposable is a much bigger gamble on an aged account than it is on one with nothing built up yet.
Why eBay accounts get targeted, and the scam pattern to know
An eBay account with saved payment methods and years of feedback is worth more to someone trying to take it over than an empty one, which is why phishing aimed at eBay sellers keeps a consistent shape: a message claiming to be from eBay about a payment placed on hold, asking you to click through and re-enter details, or a buyer who moves the conversation off-platform and asks to complete the sale by other means once trust seems established. Two-step verification, using an authenticator method rather than relying on SMS alone where eBay offers the choice, is worth turning on given what a compromised account actually holds.
The off-platform request deserves particular attention because it is aimed at bypassing the protections that make eBay eBay: buyer and seller protection, a documented dispute process, and a paper trail if something goes wrong. A request to finish a sale outside eBay's own messages and payment system removes all of that at once, and it is one of the more common ways a seemingly normal transaction turns into a total loss for whichever side gets asked to move first.
What this is for, and what it is not
What we support is one person keeping a personal number private while opening or verifying a single eBay account they intend to use honestly, whether that is browsing, buying, or building a seller account they plan to run under their own name over time. That is a straightforward privacy choice and it is the only use this article is written for.
What we do not support is equally direct. We do not help open multiple seller accounts on rented numbers to sidestep the selling limits described above, we do not help anyone evade a suspension eBay has placed on an account, and we do not help deceive a buyer or seller about who they are dealing with. A feedback score and a managed-payments identity are both meant to belong to one real, findable person, and using a rented number to blur that is not a use we build for.
Installing eBay and verifying the number
On Android
- Install eBay from Google Play and open it
- Choose Register and enter a name and email address
- Set a password, then enter the rented number when a phone number is requested
- Enter the SMS code on the verification screen before it expires
- Open Account settings and confirm the phone number and email are both correct
- Turn on two-step verification and choose the stronger authentication method eBay offers, if SMS is not the only option
- If planning to sell, complete seller registration and managed payments setup with your own real bank details
- Do not request a payout or respond to a dispute using a number you expect to give up soon
On iPhone
- Install eBay from the App Store and open it
- Choose Register and enter a name and email address
- Set a password, then enter the rented number when a phone number is requested
- Enter the SMS code on the verification screen before it expires
- Open Account settings and confirm the phone number and email are both correct
- Turn on two-step verification and choose the stronger authentication method eBay offers, if SMS is not the only option
- If planning to sell, complete seller registration and managed payments setup with your own real bank details
- Do not request a payout or respond to a dispute using a number you expect to give up soon
When the code does not arrive
In order of how often each one is the real cause:
- The connection's country does not match the number you rented
Browse from, or close to, the number's own country where possible. A mismatch between where the request originates and the number's country is a frequent reason a code is delayed or never arrives. - The number's range is one eBay's SMS route reaches unevenly
Check the country table on this page before buying; some ranges are filtered by eBay's own delivery checks regardless of how long you wait. A range with a solid recent record avoids this. - A code was requested more than once in quick succession
Stop and leave the number for a while before trying again. Repeated attempts in a short window tend to push the next one further out rather than force it through sooner. - The verification screen timed out before the code was entered
Request a fresh code instead of retyping an old one; an expired code is rejected even if it was correct. Keep the tab open so the next code can be read as soon as it lands. - The number was entered with the wrong country code or a stray leading zero
Re-check the number exactly as issued before requesting again; a mistyped digit sends the code to an unrelated number that will never show it to you. - A dispute or return case is asking for verification on a number you no longer hold
This is the gap this article warns about. There is no way to receive a code meant for that number once it has moved on; sign in with the account's email and any backup verification method set up in advance instead. - A payout is delayed pending identity verification
This is standard managed-payments checking and is not solved by the phone number; it needs the real documents and bank details eBay is asking for, submitted by the account's actual owner. - A message claiming to be eBay asks you to confirm a code or click a link about a held payment
Treat it as suspicious. eBay does not need a verification code read out to it, and a genuine hold on a payment is visible inside the account itself without following a link from a message.
Working out which case you are in
- Are you buying only, or planning to sell as well? Yes Buying only: a rented number is a comfortable fit with little downside. No Selling: read the sections on selling limits and managed payments before relying on a rented number long-term.
- Did eBay ask for a phone number during signup? Yes Enter the rented number with its country code and wait for the SMS code. No Continue with email alone for now; the number may still be requested later.
- Is there an open case, return or unpaid dispute on the account? Yes Keep the number on file live until that specific item is fully settled. No Ordinary browsing or a completed sale does not usually need the number again soon.
- Is a payout being requested through managed payments? Yes Complete identity and bank verification with real details; the number cannot substitute for this. No No payout is pending, so identity verification is not yet in play.
- Has the rented number's rental period already ended? Yes You cannot receive a fresh code on it; recover access through the account's email instead. No The number should still work for any pending verification.
Before you request another code
- Confirm the number is genuinely new to your order, not a leftover tab from a previous one
- Check the country table on this page for how eBay is delivering to that range today
- Leave a gap before requesting a second code on the same number, rather than retrying at once
- Keep the account's email address current regardless of what happens to the number
- If a case, return or dispute is open, keep the number on file live until that item is fully settled
- Move to a number and authenticator method you control long-term before feedback and sales accumulate
- Complete managed payments verification with your own real identity and bank details, never a workaround
- Never respond to a message asking you to read out a verification code, regardless of who it claims to be
- Do not use a rented number to open extra seller accounts around eBay's own selling limits
Which kind of number to use
| Kind of number | Usually works? | Privacy | Long-term recovery | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own SIM | Yes | Number tied to your real identity and carrier | Full recovery via the carrier if the phone is lost | The baseline; fine for buying, selling and long-term feedback building |
| A second physical SIM you control | Yes | Kept apart from a primary personal number | Depends on keeping that SIM active | Reasonable for a seller account meant to last for years |
| An eSIM | Usually | Same as any other mobile number once verified | Tied to the plan; losing the eSIM profile loses the number | Workable, provided it stays live through any open case or payout |
| A prepaid SIM | Usually | Same as any other mobile number once verified | Recovery depends on keeping the prepaid line topped up | Cheap short-term option; risky if it lapses during a dispute |
| A rented private number like ours | Depends on the range | Strong fit for keeping a personal number off a listing account | Weak alone; fine for browsing or getting started, not for feedback built over years | Good for buyers and new sellers; move on before feedback and payouts accumulate |
| An authenticator app | Not applicable to numbers | Codes generated locally on your device | Backup codes saved at setup restore access | The stronger choice for ongoing sign-in, given what an aged account holds |
| A public or shared SMS inbox | Rarely | No privacy — the inbox and any code in it may be visible to others | No recovery; anyone can see a code meant for you | Not suitable for any account, let alone one holding feedback or payment details |
| A VoIP or landline-range number | Rarely | Varies by provider | Not built for a phone-based dispute call from eBay | A poor fit for the reachability role the number plays during a case |

Questions
Does eBay require a phone number to sign up?
Usually yes, alongside an email address, though exactly when it is asked for can vary. Once on file, the number is used to confirm the account and, at times, to verify an unusual login or action.
Does eBay accept virtual or rented numbers?
Often, depending on the number's range and recent delivery history rather than a blanket rule against rented numbers. The table on this page shows which countries are getting eBay codes through today, and a range that struggles today can work again later.
Why do new sellers have selling limits on eBay?
eBay caps how much a new or growing seller account can list, partly as a way of managing risk on accounts without a track record yet. The limits ease as the account completes sales without problems; a phone number is one signal among several that feeds into how quickly that happens, not a way to bypass it.
Can a rented number affect whether I get paid through managed payments?
Not directly. Managed payments sends money to a bank account after its own identity verification, and that check does not run through the phone number. The number matters for logging in and responding to account activity, not for proving the payout is yours.
What happens if I lose access to the number during an open dispute?
This is a real risk. Cases run on a deadline, and being unreachable when eBay or a buyer needs a response can mean losing the case by default. Keep the number on file live until any open case, return or unpaid dispute is fully resolved.
Can eBay feedback be moved to a new account if I lose access to this one?
No. Feedback is tied permanently to the account that earned it and cannot be transferred, which is exactly why protecting sign-in access matters more on an aged eBay account than on most other apps.
Is two-step verification worth turning on for eBay?
Yes, given what an eBay account can hold: stored payment methods and years of feedback. Choosing an authenticator method over SMS alone, where eBay offers the choice, avoids depending on a phone number you might later give up.
What is the "payment on hold" message scam?
A message claiming to be from eBay, saying a payment is on hold and asking you to click a link or provide a code to release it. Genuine payment status is visible inside the account itself; we recommend never following such a link or reading a code out to anyone.
Why would a buyer or seller ask to complete a sale off eBay?
To avoid eBay's own protections, which is exactly why we do not support it. Moving a transaction outside eBay's messages and payment system removes the dispute process and paper trail that protect both sides if something goes wrong.
Can I use a rented number to open several seller accounts?
We do not support that use. eBay's selling limits exist for reasons of its own, and using rented numbers to open multiple accounts around them, or to hide from a suspension, is not the privacy use this article is written for.
Can I switch to my own number after signing up with a rented one?
Yes, eBay allows updating the phone number on file from account settings once you are signed in. Doing this before the rental ends, alongside setting a stronger sign-in method, is the safer order, especially once selling and feedback begin building up.
What if the code never arrives — am I charged?
You are charged only when a code actually reaches the number; an order where nothing arrives before the window closes is refunded automatically, with nothing to claim. Check the country table before buying to avoid a range with weak delivery.
