Two jobs for one number

Walmart uses your phone number first as a security check: when you sign in from a new device, change your password or update payment details, it can send a code to confirm it is you. It also uses the number to keep you informed about orders — when a pickup is ready, when a delivery is on its way, when something is substituted.

The first job happens in seconds. The second happens over hours or days. A temporary number can cover the first and fail the second.

Pickup and delivery need a reachable number

For store pickup, you check in through the app when you set off or arrive, and staff bring the order to your car. For delivery, drivers may text or call about access, a missing item or where to leave the bags. Both work smoothly only if the number on the order reaches you.

If you use a separate number for shopping to keep your main line private, make it one you keep — a second line, not a rental that ends before the delivery window.

Substitutions and the approval window

When an item is out of stock, Walmart may offer a substitute and ask you to approve or reject it in the app, sometimes with a short deadline. Notifications and texts are how you learn about it. Missed messages mean you get the default choice — which may not be what you wanted.

Protecting an account with saved cards

Walmart accounts often hold saved cards, addresses and a membership. That makes them a target for account takeover, where someone orders to a different address with your card. A current phone number and a strong, unique password are the basic protection; check your order history if anything looks unfamiliar.

If the account was set up with a temporary number, change it to your own in account settings before adding cards.

Texts that are not from Walmart

Fake texts claiming a missed delivery, a prize, a refund or a problem with your account are common, as are callers asking for payment in gift cards. Walmart does not ask for gift-card payments or for your verification codes. Check orders in the app or on walmart.com rather than through links in texts.

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The verification code did not arrive
   Check the number and wait before requesting again; some number types may be refused.
2. You missed pickup or delivery updates
   Check the number on the order and turn on app notifications.
3. A driver could not reach you
   The number on the order must take calls and texts during the delivery window.
4. An order you did not place appears
   Change your password, review saved cards and contact Walmart support.
5. A text asks you to pay a delivery fee through a link
   It is a scam. Check your orders in the app.
