The problem with old Yahoo accounts

People opened Yahoo accounts in the 2000s and 2010s, added a mobile number and a second email, and then changed both over the years. The account kept working while the password was remembered. When the password is lost, or Yahoo asks for a verification on a new device, the codes go to details that no longer reach anyone.

That is the most common Yahoo access problem, and the fix is simple while you are still signed in: check the recovery phone and email in account security, and update them.

What makes a good recovery number

A recovery number should be one you will have for years: your main mobile or a second line you keep. It should not be a number that will pass to someone else, because whoever holds it can receive your recovery codes.

That is why a rented number should not stay on a Yahoo account you keep. Use it to finish signup if you need to, then replace it with your own number and add a recovery email.

Sign-in approval in the app

Yahoo lets you sign in by approving a notification in the Yahoo Mail app on your phone instead of typing a password or a code. Once it is set up, sign-ins do not depend on text messages. If you use Yahoo Mail on your phone, it is the simplest protection to add.

Keep a recovery phone and email as well. The app approval covers daily sign-ins, but if you lose the phone, recovery still falls back on those details.

Inactive accounts can be deleted

Yahoo's terms allow it to delete accounts that have not been used for about a year, and the address may later become available to someone else. If an old account still receives important mail, such as bank notices or password resets for other services, sign in now and then, or move those services to an address you use.

Old passwords and past breaches

Yahoo suffered very large data breaches in 2013 and 2014, and old passwords from that era still circulate. If you have reused an old Yahoo password anywhere, change it there. Give Yahoo a new, unique password as well.

Fake "Yahoo support" numbers

Searching for Yahoo account help often brings up phone numbers for "Yahoo support" that belong to scammers. They ask for remote access or payment to "recover" the account. Use Yahoo's own sign-in helper and help pages. Yahoo does not charge to recover an account.

In order of how often each one is the real cause:

1. The recovery code goes to an old number
   Try the recovery email, or use Yahoo's sign-in helper and follow its steps.
2. No SMS arrived at signup
   Check the country code, wait, and request once more.
3. The account seems to have disappeared
   It may have been deleted for inactivity. Deleted accounts generally cannot be restored.
4. A "Yahoo support" number asks for payment
   It is a scam. Use Yahoo's own help pages.
5. You reused your Yahoo password elsewhere
   Change it on every site where you used it.
